It's good to see the response from KDE is we fucked up, we know we fucked up, now we're going to start working on a solution, not "oh it's just a one off, it's not that big of a deal"

sometimes its not the issue or mistake or whatever that matters most to me ... its how its handled... I give credit (will see if they follow through) to KDE for this, versus what Canonical keeps doing with the malware in the snap store

it is good they’re working on it. Paul Brown’s answer is a bit disconnected. I feel from the user base and excessive, but it is very good they are talking about it.

The baffling intelligence of a single cell… This, long-read deep-dive into how a single e-coli cell uses chemotaxis to find its food is fascinating for those interested in #Biology and human #physiology. TL;DR even simple small cells have an internal bio computer that mimics basic intelligence and adaptability. #CellularBiology #Chemotaxis

Several of us overly online biologists spent years quietly doing an experiment on Twitter, trying to find out if tweeting about new studies from a set of mid-range journals caused an increase in later citations, compared to set of untweeted control articles.

Turns out we had no noticeable effect; the tweeted papers were cited at the same rate as the control set.

Our paper, headed by Trevor Branch, was published today in PLOS One:

KDE Global Themes Are Inherently Unsafe #Linux #YouTube youtu.be/2pQnfQDROes
in reply to Brodie Robertson

the fact that on modern Linux still every executable runs with all the permissions of the user is kinda baffling.

The permission system is developed for multi-user systems where users don't trust each other but trust the software. On modern PCs, we have mostly only one user, but a bunch of random executables that we shouldn't have to trust with our whole drives.

Time for the year of the BSD desktop, anyone? 😁

Fully funded PhD project to work on current natural selection, evolution and demography in several populations of Albatrosses, with fieldwork in the subantarctic.

A French version of the project is here: univ-larochelle.fr/wp-content/…, but if you do not read French know that it is flexible anyway. I will post an English ad later.

Email me with any question if you may be interested.

Fossil stingray (Cyclobatis sp.)
Upper Cretaceous. Approximately 100.5 million to 66 million years ago. When alive, this creature lived in warm, shallow seas and had a very short tail, which was fitted with a venomous stinger. Discovered in Haqil, Byblos, Lebanon. It just happens to look like an ancient space alien. #science #fossil #archeology #evolution #photo #nature #biology #wildlife

I think the solution here is to host their own Gitea/Forgejo instance off-shore. 😝
in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮

It seems they moved to a self-hosted forgejo instance. git.suyu.dev/suyu/suyu
At least for me, GitLab doing that urged me to take a look at Coderberg.

I really enjoyed this Cup of Jo essay about the pleasure of coming back to childhood hobbies as an adult. I know I’ve mentioned this here before, but my own life transformed when I got back into what I loved as a kid (drawing!). kottke.org/24/03/on-returning-…
in reply to kottke.org

kids are a way into this -- working on Halloween costumes, school projects, etc., have restarted my love of all things crafty. not sure what direction that will take post-kid, but just feels good to use the muscles!

It occurred to me when visiting my parents there, how much living in The Villages resembles the rhythms of high school.

in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮

I'd also add that third party themes (for Qt in general) can lead to segmentation faults, causing applications to crash. It's quite annoying for application maintainers which receive crash reports they can't fix because of that.

A team at NASA is trying to reestablish communication with Voyager 1 after a malfunction left the probe broadcasting jibberish. The problem: debugging the issue from almost 1 light-day away is challenging! blogs.nasa.gov/sunspot/2024/03…

In the movie version the jibberish is actually aliens manipulating the computer to make contact, which is discovered when a cleaning person decodes it on their shift in the middle of the night.

@gaskocher The Steam Deck in the options will only ever be FSR1, FSR2+ can only be done in-game by the developers directly
