I hate to say it, but I think there is a case for regarding Trump Media as an #ExittoCommuity. Tell me why I'm wrong. nytimes.com/2024/03/28/podcast…

DonesTech: La infraestructura feminista como creación de lo que nos sostiene

por Spideralex

#hackfeminismo #CuidadosDigitales

donestech.net/es/noticia/dones…

Why is the default for digital communities a system where community members have no power, representation, or agency?

This “implicit feudalism” isn’t great for moderators either — they’re just vassals of the platform CEOs.

Read an excerpt of media theorist @ntnsndr's new book, Governable Spaces: Democratic Design for Online Life.

People Hate the Idea of Car-Free Cities — Until They Live in One. The car-free schemes end up being so popular and work so well that “once cities make the decision to reduce or remove cars, they rarely go back”. wired.com/story/car-free-citie…
in reply to kottke.org

A car free city would be inaccessible to me due to disability. And the person who acts as a carer to me can't cope with public transport due to his own disability so even if the bus was actually wheelchair adapted it would still be inaccessible.

Hey everyone!

I'm working on a video to see what the Linux community (or at least people who follow me) actually use.

So, I created a little form, hosted on my Nextcloud (hopefully it's up to the task...)

It's only up for 2 days, so don't hesitate to share it around, it will help me "touch grass" and see if my preconceived notions are confirmed, or invalidated!

nextcloud.thelinuxexp.com/inde…

Of course, it's all anonymous, no personal data, it's just for the purposes of creating the video.

in reply to Brodie Robertson

Honestly I love being a raccoon digging through dumpsters. I have years of experience lf finding all the good pizza and sometimes I find beans that are still unopened in a can. Usually I need to smash it with a rock (read through source code) to get at them though. 🦝

All this talk about #xzorcist over the weekend, I want to also point out that it's important to remember that the "software supply chain" largely does *not* exist in regards to open source, because most people have no real relationship other than parasitic consumption with the project.

@Di4na's great blog post on this topic explains it quite well: softwaremaxims.com/blog/not-a-…

Wow! This short about Spiderman and PTSD is terrific. Sony created this as a fundraiser for the Kevin Love Fund, which works to reduce the stigma around mental health issues.

It filled the hole in the post-Star Trek era. I still think the Eagle is a great concept for a utility transport vehicle.

Recently I've been receiving many "friend" requests on Facebook from new accounts by US men. The accounts usually involve a few photos of men praying and men with guns. I suspect this has to do with the up-coming US election.
in reply to Muse

@Yes - this is typical of the Trump/Republican Mob. Guns. God and Trump. (Vomit!)

I'm really appreciating this idea on FOSS from my colleague @bwag—not just "free as in speech" or "free as in beer" but "free as in way." Increasingly, that is, FOSS acts like a freeway.

bowaggoner.com/blahg/2024/03-1…

It is infrastructure for business—free for all, but a means of profit for some. And that affects how we should build economies around it.

@bwag

in reply to Nathan Schneider

I agree with you.

But why emphasize "economies" in this way? Do we talk about books like this?

Practical benefits have to flow from the ethical ones or else we're in danger of playing a game where economy is on top of freedom. See China: in the 1990s there was thought that democracy would follow capitalism. But no. You can have capitalism with no Freedom.

This book cloudempires.org/ is pretty good about this issue (though doesn't discuss FOSS directly)

in reply to JK

@jamienk You don't have freeways without having an appropriate way to pay for them. Similarly, I think it matters how we pay for FOSS freeways—especially if we want to ensure that they don't become captured by those who currently pay for them.
@JK

i read @ntnsndr's new book /Governable Spaces/. it's core observation that most of online, associational life is authoritarian in governance is very smart, but i wish that he had spent more time arguing why we should prefer more democracy.

Report links pulpwood estate clearing Bornean orangutan habitat to RGE Group

news.mongabay.com/2024/03/repo…

JAKARTA — Indonesia is experiencing a resurgence in forest clearance due to the expansion of pulpwood and oil palm plantations, reversing years of declining deforestation associated with these two industries. And at the forefront of this new wave of deforestation is a single company: PT Mayawana Persada.

Part of me feels like Morgan Freeman, who remarked about Black History Month, "I don't want a month. Black History is American History."

Our trans brothers and sisters are our HUMAN brothers and sisters. A day doesn't really cut it, though I understand the sentiment.

in reply to Muse

In this case it's all about being visible enough to get people to recognise humanity when they see it.

in reply to Muse

Yes, this textbook scam has to go. In the UK, universities have to inform students upfront about any additional costs incurred during their studies, including costs to buy books. (Basically, students in the UK are treated as consumers, for better and for worse, and are subject to consumer protection laws.) And just like magic, those requirements to buy a book went away.

in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

The western industrial scale food system is certainly problematic, but, "Uses 37 percent of all ice free land," really? Source?

@lisamelton and yet when farmers protest, governments bend on climate change. Fuck farmers, charge a few of them as accessories to murder after the fact.

This is a bad take. I'd like to see the OpenSSF show a bit more empathy. A badge isn't going to stop this sort of attack.

Imagine if it did already have a badge and something was snuck in anyway, I can make a pretty good guess that this would either not exist as a blog post or it would have a very different tone
