Update to the article on racing game BlazeRush ending support for Linux, macOS and SteamVR: dev says they just won't be updated, but still playable (see the bottom) gamingonlinux.com/2024/05/raci…

Game looks cool, but it never supported modern Macs. It supports Intel Macs, so those of us with Apple Silicon aren't getting it taken away, they just never updated for the new architecture.

It's a shame, as Microsoft adds privacy-invasive features to Windows, developers pull support for other platforms. Part of the cost of any Windows software is your data.

Crows Can Actually Count Out Loud, Amazing New Study Shows

in reply to Muse

I've read perhaps half of Dickens' books. Bleak House is indeed a good one, especially given my legal training. But my favorite is Dombey and Son (by-the-way, it is Dombey's daughter, who is the central protagonist in the novel.) It's also got Mr. Toots, who, apart from having a surprising role, provides the name to a coffee/chocolate cafe in the next town (Capitola) down the coast from Santa Cruz. The book also has the evil lawyer mangled by a train.
in reply to Muse

"The book also has the evil lawyer mangled by a train."
Clearly, this makes the books worth reading! XD

Hard to disagree with this take.

Support for Windows 10 will end in October 2025

After October 14, 2025, Microsoft will no longer provide security updates or technical support for Windows 10. Your PC will still work, but we recommend moving to Windows 11.

YouTube actually added a good feature for once, you can now set 3 thumbnails for a video and it will automatically A/B test them for you, you could already do this manually but this massively stream lines the process.
in reply to Brodie Robertson

I've recently installed DeArrow and I'm so happy not to see all these A/B-tested thumbnails '^^

in reply to Brodie Robertson

you made excellent points.

was thinking that W11 + Recall will be the most targeted computer in the world. what a treasure once you compromise someone's computer, way beyond passwords.

also as you said, domestic abuse victims would greatly suffer if their partner is forcing this OS and turns on this feature.

i think Linux will see a small bump is users, maybe a sustained increase if all linux users are nice to Window users who are trying linux.

in reply to Brodie Robertson

While this likely won't remain like this forever, I'm glad that this "feature" is restricted to certain hardware as of right now. At the very least I know it will be a few years till many people just buying a laptop unknowingly get this feature. Since I'm sure computers with this feature will more expensive than those without it.

Though this also means most people won't care since the roll out will be slow. I also imagine competent IT teams will disable this on business laptops.

It's just stunning to me how quickly these features are being rolled out.

Hey, @Andrew Pam! Have we recorded this article referencing Ted's work?

A Short History of Bi-Directional Links

Seventy years ago we dreamed up links that would allow us to create two-way, contextual conversations. Why don't we use them on the web?

in reply to Muse

@Andrew Pam Since a number of people have hearted this, you might want to explain that Ted does have a system in mind to keep trolls from misusing bi-directional links in the way the author suggests.

PCGamesN wrote up that the Steam Deck is hitting 18,000 games playable/verified. This is completely incorrect. It's closing in on 15,000.

Valve did not verify ~4,000 in only about two months 🙃

I reached out, hopefully they correct all the numbers in the article being wrong.

1) Want to know how much of your metagenome is eukaryotic? No references? No problem. We developed SingleM microbial fraction (SMF) and ran it on 250k metagenomes biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/20….

If you know what Eukaryotes are there, you can filter reads by mapping to their genomes. However, often you don’t know what’s in your sample, or the euk doesn’t have a genome.
