"Maps are to geography what notation is to music."
British writer, geographer, historian, journalist, cartographer, and inventor John Francon Williams died #OTD in 1911.
In 1881, Williams's seminal book The Geography of the Oceans was published. This book focuses on topics such as: General Geography of the Oceans, Physical Geography of the Oceans, the Geography of Particular Oceans. It was the first book to cover with such intensity the geography of the oceans.

Heartbreak has turned to rage in Israel. Can Benjamin Netanyahu survive the biggest challenge to his rule?
"Israelis are once again venting their anger over the failure of the government to reach a deal to release the hostages still being held by Hamas in Gaza.
"Hundreds of thousands of protesters have taken to the streets across the country over the past couple days, with some gathering outside the homes of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the US embassy. The first nationwide strike since last Octoberโs Hamas attack also brought the country to a standstill.
"The spark for the protests was the discovery of the bodies of six hostages who had been executed by Hamas shortly before Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) located them. On Monday, Netanyahu issued a rare apology to the families."

Heartbreak has turned to rage in Israel. Can Benjamin Netanyahu survive the biggest challenge to his rule?
The mass protests are evidence that many in Israel feel abandoned by their government. Yet, Netanyahu is unlikely to shift course. The Conversation

A team of scientists from the University of Bristol recently released research that pushed the date of our Last Universal Common Ancestor (LUCA) back to about 4.2 billion years ago.
This suggests that the life that is in each of us, and in each of the organisms that make up our very large extended family, runs in an unbroken chain backward for 4.2 billion years.
Thatโs a pretty considerable investment by the universe in every living thing.
Perhaps we should reflect on that a little more as we continue to muck around on this planet.
It might be time to start fitting in.

@Gargron This article is based off of information that was originally making rounds in 2016. In 8 years since, there was never **any concrete evidence** showing that they can actually do this. None.
Considering that adtech is rife with fraud (to the tune of $billions swindled from advertisers annually), a more likely explanation is that this is just a bunch of grifters with a pitch deck looking to score off of gullible advertisers.

Like gtfo, you're building off of Valve's work, you even reference Lutris and Heroic Games Launcher and claim that SteamOS is 'Compatible with Steam only' and 'Locked to the Valveverse' like what?
I'm not even saying that a gaming distro not tied to Valve's ecosystem is a bad thing, but the desperation to paint SteamOS as on par with Windows is absurd.

in reply to Muse • • •There is , as you say, nothing wrong with the process being easier or harder for an individual.
A person with the 'gift' of being able to put words to the page, especially for something like a writing challenge, is to be admired. But it does seem like showing off, more than 'intentional writing'.
Using AI ( or just another persons work ) to generate the required number of words to complete the challenge is not the same. It's almost like seeking the participation award is the point.

NaNoWriMo is about getting writing practise. It's about writing so fast that you don't care about spelling errors or plot holes. You just do it! And it's totally okay if it's a mess. No one really expects greatness, just fun and getting past self censorship.
People using certain AI tools are trying to skip steps. They let the AI take the chances for them, and how much do they learn by doing this? I have worked in more than one type of creative art. I know people who think others should love their singing, without their bothering to do the work of singing scales everyday. I know others who think telling a machine what kind of painting they want makes them an artist, but they spent no time thinking about what colours to use, how to compose the work, what lines will bring the most expression. All they have done is behave like a commissioning editor who says, "I want a cover for this book that looks like this".

NaNoWriMo's argument that it is classist to disapprove of AI use because not everyone can afford to pay an editor is spurious, because not everyone can afford Grammarly or even a computer. Calling it ableist is spurious because no one says a person can't use a spell checker. What we are worried about are people who are using AI to do the storytelling for them. You cannot charge someone with copyright infringement if they "stole your idea". The courts are only interested in the execution. If you have an idea that a large language model AI uses to create a story from having scraped many other people's works on the internet, then your idea is worthless. Other people's skills at execution made the resulting novel possible.
Some people want fame and fortune to be delivered to them on a platter, with no real respect for the art.
