‘Almost collapsed’: behind the Korean film crisis and why K-pop isn’t immune
"South Korea’s entertainment dominance appears unshakeable. From BTS conquering global charts to Parasite sweeping the Oscars in 2020 and Korean dramas topping Netflix, Korean popular culture has never been more visible. Exports driven by the country’s arts hit a record $15.18bn (£11bn) in 2024, cementing the country’s reputation as a cultural superpower.
"But inside South Korea, the two industries that helped build the Korean Wave – cinema and K-pop – are now experiencing fundamental transformations, with their survival strategies potentially undermining the creative foundations of their success."
Thank you @Christoph S and Marie for passing on this link.

There was a recent poll here about what Desktop OS you use and Linux was the most popular answer. This proves this community is far more technical than your average consumer.
I'm not critical of that, I'm just saying we need to appreciate we aren't representative of that vast majority of people out there. I can't even get "normies" to *consider* joining the fediverse.
I don't want to "chase numbers" I want my family members to be safe but we're doing a terrible job attracting them.

More than 20% of the videos that YouTube’s algorithm shows to new users are “AI slop”
– low-quality AI-generated content designed to farm views, research has found.
The video-editing company Kapwing surveyed 15,000 of the world’s most popular YouTube channels
– the top 100 in every country
– and found that 278 of them contain only AI slop.
Together, these AI slop channels have amassed more than 63 billion views and 221 million subscribers,
-- generating about $117m (£90m) in revenue each year, according to estimates.
The researchers also made a new YouTube account and found that 104 of the first 500 videos recommended to its feed were AI slop.
One-third of the 500 videos were “#brainrot”, a category that includes AI slop and other low-quality content made to monetise attention.

After 15 months of hard work, my dad has finished this impressive model of Minas Tirith! It is 1.4 m high and entirely hand-made out of wood. One of the most time-consuming parts was manually engraving the bricks on all walls and buildings, but this was key to properly convey the huge size of the city. Everything was painted by hand, adding some wear and tear. For a behind-the-scenes look at how he built this check out this video: youtube.com/watch?v=Z1Ywlc8ojj…

Hungarian astronaut Tibor Kapu created an accurate physical model of a soft shape while on board the International Space Station.
Oxford's Mathematical Institute reports about the development of shapes that can physically exist only in zero gravity. These "soft shapes" lack corners and are partially available as biological tissues. But recreating them in practice against the pull of gravity is challenging. The fluid dynamics require micro or zero gravity.

We have a huge homeless population here.
I divide them into three rough classes.
- People who have been hit with circumstances that destabilize their lives. These people need stability to recover and a chance (or two or three). We all benefit by helping these people.
- People who have become addicted to drugs. It is unclear to me how to help these people.
- People who are trying to live the Jack Kerouac lifestyle. We have many of these around here - at least one is a $millionaire trust fund kid. (I pejoratively identify these people as the ones carrying nice guitars - Gibson or Martin, or better - on their Santa Cruz [an expensive brand of] mountain bikes I don't want to help these people.
