np, it hasn't changed other than that I think. The sprouting jumper/yumper is a side-effect of being to chain them like .YYYYYYY. This makes some constructions a lot more fun to use 😀

@Gargron I saw this and it reminded me when my post about gimp (mastodon.social/@wakest/100847…) made your 2018 list (blog.joinmastodon.org/2018/12/…) which is sorta sad to see how many of them are now 404 embeds

I was thinking of this, and proceeding cautiously through the mist, when I began to fancy that I saw some objects darker than the cloud looming in front of me. A few steps brought me nearer, and a shudder of unutterable horror ran through me when I saw a circle of gigantic forms, many times higher than myself, upstanding grim and grey through the veil of cloud before me.

I suppose I must have fainted, for I found myself some time afterwards sitting upon the ground, sick and deadly cold. There were the figures, quite still and silent, seen vaguely through the thick gloom, but in human shape indisputably.

A sudden thought occurred to me, which would have doubtless struck me at once had I not been prepossessed with forebodings at the time that I first saw the figures, and had not the cloud concealed them from me—I mean that they were not living beings, but statues. I determined that I would count fifty slowly, and was sure that the objects were not alive if during that time I could detect no sign of motion.

How thankful was I when I came to the end of my fifty and there had been no movement!

I counted a second time—but again all was still.

I then advanced timidly forward, and in another moment I saw that my surmise was correct. I had come upon a sort of Stonehenge of rude and barbaric figures.

There was snow upon their heads and wherever snow could lodge. Each statue had been built of four or five enormous blocks, but how these had been raised and put together is known to those alone who raised them. Each was terrible after a different kind. One was raging furiously, as in pain and great despair; another was lean and cadaverous with famine; another cruel and idiotic, but with the silliest simper that can be conceived—this one had fallen, and looked exquisitely ludicrous in his fall—the mouths of all were more or less open, and as I looked at them from behind, I saw that their heads had been hollowed.

I was sick and shivering with cold. Solitude had unmanned me already, and I was utterly unfit to have come upon such an assembly of fiends in such a dreadful wilderness and without preparation.

Then came a gust of howling wind, accompanied with a moan from one of the statues above me. I clasped my hands in fear. I felt like a rat caught in a trap, as though I would have turned and bitten at whatever thing was nearest me. The wildness of the wind increased, the moans grew shriller, coming from several statues, and swelling into a chorus. I almost immediately knew what it was, but the sound was so unearthly that this was but little consolation.

The inhuman beings into whose hearts the Evil One had put it to conceive these statues, had made their heads into a sort of organ-pipe, so that their mouths should catch the wind and sound with its blowing. It was horrible.

@rostiger you can add any page of the wiki, and it should pick up the feed path in the <head> tag.

Ah, that's such a great idea! This way you can subscribe to any one page of the wiki - smart!

I heaped every invective upon them that my tongue could utter as I rushed away from them into the mist, and even after I had lost sight of them, and turning my head round could see nothing but the storm-wraiths driving behind me, I heard their ghostly chanting, and felt as though one of them would rush after me and grip me in his hand and throttle me.

”It has been clear for a long time, to anyone willing to see, that the people running the federal government—Trump, Miller, Noem, Bovino and more—are monsters. It has been equally obvious that ICE and the Border Patrol are now filled with sadistic thugs. Yet many people—almost the entire GOP, everyone serving in the Trump administration, some Democrats, a significant part of the media—were too cowardly to admit the obvious.”

Hey everyone, I need some help to keep my head above water for Februrary. The job search has been rough, and while I’ve been pushing hard to get back on my feet, but I’m at a point where I need some help to get through this stretch.

I’ve set a goal of $1,400 on Ko-fi to cover my essential living costs. This includes my rent, utilities, and bills. Anything remaining will go toward food and basic necessities.

If you have the means to contribute or can give this a boost, it would mean a lot to me. Thank you for your help.

Alex Pretti was an American hero. He saved lives. He protected people. He cared deeply about his community, unlike the murderous thugs who killed him.

The very last thing he did was try to help a woman who had been pepper-sprayed and violently shoved to the ground by ICE.

He was a Good Samaritan — and they murdered him for it. Now they’re trying to rewrite his history. They want to smear him. To dehumanize him.

Don’t let them.

not sure whether to laugh or cry at Elisabeth Bik’s latest revelation on Pubpeer

in reply to Dorothy Bishop

I'm thinking that for every paper that Dr Bik finds, there must be hundreds, if not thousands, that slip through. She is an absolute hero, but her work mainly highlights the institutional failures of universities and journals. They ought to stop this type of fraud, but don't.
in reply to Stephan Neuhaus

I am curious how common this particular kind of citation manipulation is

"The toolbox isn’t particularly varied. President Trump is using all the instruments: the reported quotas for ICE arrests; the paramilitary force made up of thugs drunk on their own brutality; the spectacle of random violence, particularly in city streets; the postmortem vilification of the victims. It’s only natural that our brains struggle to find logic in what we are seeing. There is a logic, and this logic has a name. It’s called state terror."

probably. Ya know I'd be less upset at the prospect of more autonomous vehicles on the road if the tech actually worked well.

No criminal record. Worked for the VA as an ICU nurse. Legal gun owner. Homeowner. Upstanding member of his community. He was a hero in his career, and went out like a hero trying to protect the women the ICE officer pushed down.

A TRUE hero all around, he didn’t deserve this. RIP #AlexPretti

@💜 🩷 Iconoclast Beryl 🩷 💜 Yes I realize that, then you're left with whatever autonomy you can get and even navigating a crowd given the autonomy can be a challenge, so narrowing the input immediately can be the first recourse, hence earplugs.

that doesn't actually address the problem at all. It would only make things more difficult at best.

★ The iOS 26 Adoption Rate Is Not Bizarrely Low Compared to Previous Years
daringfireball.net/2026/01/ios…
in reply to Daring Fireball

Anecdotally, my parents are holding off on upgrading their devices to 26 because they don’t like how it looks and how much laggier it is.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron Three of my four kids have upgraded to 26 and they hate it. Laggy and goes through a battery way faster than 18. So now they all want new iPhones....
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron same here. Must say the way Apple is pressuring to update is insane. I was on iOS 17 a year ago with little grief to update but this time round, even myself, I’m having to be super careful what I press. Constant notifications on daily basis to update as well. One fam iPad has updated that they didn’t want to. Best of all is this patch, which Apple imo has intentionally avoided providing to iOS 26 supported iPhones - mastodon.world/@InterfaceEngin…

I am taking down the paywall for this one, as I believe it remains relevant as a reflection on the limits of the authoritarian assault – and the need to push back against the idea that America is inevitably and irresistibly marching towards a Trump dictatorship.

This week’s piece:

steady.page/en/democracyameric…

in reply to Thomas Zimmer

The idea that protests and public opinion are meaningless in the face of the Trumpist assault, that authoritarian regimes are impervious to public pressure, is still widespread.

But it is wrong. And it perpetuates the regime's assertion of inevitability.

MAGA liking ST is like other right-wingers liking punk rock and then suddenly getting upset ("Never again will I buy their music or go to their concerts!") when a band speaks out against racism - while their songs have done so for a long time. It's like they're very superficial and don't care for actual substance.
