yeah but i can buy a switch etc and shit will work. Steamdeck is just the Linux Desktop revisited, dont expect the Wifi to work, write your own ppp scripts, this and that are not supported but some script kiddie in Finland wrote a hack 12 years ago that might work, yadayada. I dont have the time or patience for it. And I'm saying that as someone who would buy this thing in a heartbeat.

no in all honesty my experiences with it thus far exceeded my expectations by a lot. For a device with a large smartphone battery it's gaming performance was great, and other than the occasional fiddling with resolutions on the tv, and (few) games that don't run at all, it's been awesome.
it's good to know. Anyway, the 8BitDo seems to have some advantages over the Xbox one: more buttons on top, back buttons โ which I use to map the F3 key on the Epic Store games for the friends list on the Deck. I might resell my Xbox controller for this one, I have always been frustrated by its dependency-ish to the dongle.
@eniko none that Iโve noticed, even when using Remote Play it feels good. Comfortable too. Just love that i can tap the deck on, and pull the controller out the charging station and it turns on by itself and links up ๐
@jeffeb3 Sounds like you picked up the BT model, which has Switch control layout. Steam has a way to flip them, but it will only affect games that properly use Steam Input and detect that setting. Mine is the Wireless model, that has normal Xbox layout.
Thanks. I have the wireless black one. The graphics and shortcut icons on the screen are xbox, but they don't match the buttons on the controller.
I can look deeper. I thought maybe there was a simple toggle you knew about to fix it. I am pretty sure I can at least remap them in the 8bitdo sw, but I would rather just change the names in the steam software.
ok. After some playing around, I have two games I have been playing that behave differently.
Pikuniku was the one I was trying to get to work with my kiddo. When it said press Y, we had to press X. This config switched the buttons around, and the labels didn't change, so this worked.
Spiderman was wrong in the same way, but it also shows the xbox logos and style of buttons. When I change this setting, the buttons swap, and the labels also swap. So that was really confusing.
Tonight I decided to add candy eyes to our chocolate-dipped strawberries, only to learn that when it comes to desserts there is a very, very fine line between โwhimsicalโ and โcursedโ

@Chris Trottier @Eugen Rochko What is needed are philanthropists or impact investors who do not expect any financial ROI. In other words, frame funding asks in terms of SROI then apply for philanthropy grants and impact investments (in addition to any donation efforts).
Is there a community foundation set up in the US that is fundraising for Fediverse, Mastodon, or any of the other Fediverse projects? There is a lot of opportunity for US corporate, foundation, and donor advised dollars toward projects like these - as well as a lot of wealthy US donors that only make large donations to 501c3s!
@oz3mze @Eugen Rochko @Chris Trottier One problem with that is requiring 501c3 status is cumbersome and not free. Most open-source projects are privately funded by companies using the software or self-funded. In rare cases large foundations may provide funding but then they control dev direction which is not always desirable - and certainly not in the case of the various competing projects in the Fediverse. You can't fund/not fund based on adherence to software terms without entering into legal risks further increasing costs.
@shelenn Im curious because my background is in foundation and nonprofit management specifically in grow/scaling startups. When I read the arsTechnica article I was intrigued and was curious if the people/projects behind Fediverse are interested in exploring setting up a community foundation. This removes alot of the redtape involved in funding projects not incorporated in the US as well as eliminates funding restrictions that would likely be where dev direction comes from
@shelenn Wasn't suggesting moving Mastondon to the US. Was asking if a community foundation was set up for the Fedi ecosystem in the US (or any connected to a US 501c3 for that matter). Asking because I have seen the community foundation model work as a funding model. US donors also dont receive tax breaks for donations to international not-for-profits so having a partner or subsidiary that is a 501c3 for processing US donations can be useful
XFCE used to be one of the major Linux desktop environments but over time it's faded into more and more obscurity but it's not dead yet and a Wayland version...
I love xfce but this part does bug me. I wish there was a way to upgrade w/out having it reduce what xfce aimed for. Tho I'm contemplating switching back to sway or something so I can use conky or something else. I just wish instead of fighting on this would make things more user-friendly for customizing things without having to be a tech nerd.....

exclusives are nice for hardware makers that aim to sell more of their hardware, even if it's at the cost of selling less copies of that game.
So if Valve wants to sell more Decks an exclusive could help them, but their aim is not to sell more Decks, they couldn't care less if you played your games on PC, the Deck, GPD or Aya Neo.
I mean, technically it already has exclusives. Probably more than any other 'console'. Probably more than any console has games.
There is a vast, vast library of PC-only games. And because the Deck is an open platform it can play these games. From old classics like the Freespace series to shitty old flash games, you can play them on the deck.
And that's entirely because they made an open platform instead of the locked down stuff every other console does.
the game wouldnโt do well. Steam deck is great, but it is expensive and doesnโt have the footing as other platforms yet. It needs another year to hammer out stuff. But if valve released half-life part 3 on the deck Iโd buy it.
steam deck is too open, having any exclusives would be not only pointless but even harmfull, due to fact that exclusivity would be forced by some kind of DRM, which stinks. Do not want. However it would be cool to have games that uses steam decks features more boldly, gyroscope and touch panels are damn cool and creative use of them should be encouraged!
