Hello fedi. i am trying to solve the "fetch all replies" problem once and for all that makes the fedi feel a lot more desolate and with a lot more reply guys in it than it should be. this is take two, where before i had it triggered by a button, but now i think it should happen on the server-side whenever you expand a post. can anyone help me out figure out how to make this more efficient by only fetching posts that the server doesn't already have? i am not sure what the best strategy would be, and if anyone with experience doing efficient rails and SQL stuff could give me some pointers that would be gr8. the patch is actually extremely simple it just needs a few nice things to make it not DDoS everyone.

Given how fast CPUs have become, I honestly think that speed should no longer be a main concern for most people and Intel should probably not market processors based on speed alone. In fact, I'd argue that most people's systems are probably over-specced for what they actually use.
I'd much rather these chip manufacturers actually focus on things like security and stability and market that instead. Though I guess it's easier to market raw performance.

There was also the sidewalk etiquette that included the man/boy always walks on the outside, streetside. This was to protect the woman/girl from water, mud, rocks and debris being splashed on her by passing vehicles. To this day, when I see couples walking on a sidewalk, and the man walks on the inside, I know they were never taught that particular sidewalk etiquette. I believe it's as old as the horse and buggy days, perhaps even an older tradition. In the South states in America, as I remember, etiquette was a very important issue. One practical reason for this tradition is related to historical sanitation practices. In medieval times, people would throw waste and garbage out of windows into the streets. By walking on the outside of the sidewalk, men were shielding women from any debris that might fall from above.
Another reason is related to the dangers of the streets. In the past, streets were not as safe as they are today, with risks such as horse-drawn carriages, mud, and even criminals. By walking on the streetside, men were better positioned to protect women from these potential dangers.
Chivalry also played a significant role in this tradition. In medieval and Renaissance Europe, chivalry was an important code of conduct that emphasized courtesy, honor, and protecting the weak. Walking on the outside of the sidewalk was seen as a way for men to demonstrate their willingness to protect and care for women. While the reasons for this tradition may have evolved over time, the practice itself has persisted as a symbolic gesture of respect and protection towards women.
