I don't aspire to be a writer. If someone wants to write for any reason, fine by me.
There is , as you say, nothing wrong with the process being easier or harder for an individual.
A person with the 'gift' of being able to put words to the page, especially for something like a writing challenge, is to be admired. But it does seem like showing off, more than 'intentional writing'.
Using AI ( or just another persons work ) to generate the required number of words to complete the challenge is not the same. It's almost like seeking the participation award is the point.

My occasional invitation to anyone who might like to sign up to my newsletter on my artworks about networks: shanefinan.org/newsletter.html

It's where I structure a lot of thoughts. I send one every 3 months or so, and they're a little bit like blog posts. The most recent one is also at that link, for a taster.

LexicMap: efficient sequence alignment against millions of prokaryotic genomes

Every time!
Desmond is good at giving me the bereft Victorian waif look. He sits a distance away from the door staring at me. His eyes are wide and his head tips to one side. "But why? Why, mumma are you leaving me all alone in the cold cold house?"
in reply to Muse

I always did. And the number of sleeps if it was a trip.
in reply to Muse

We always tell the 'kids' when we're leaving and when we expect to be back.

in reply to Muse

I actually think the man is an extraordinary, loving and compassionate person. There he was, in a playground alone, having fun swinging on a swing. That's very wonderful. He sees No.1 out there all alone, with no one. He can relate. He takes her to a nice bench and places her up on it, beside him - not leaving her on the ground. To express even more compassion, he places his arm around No. I as he's drinking from his cup, perhaps warm coffee from a thermos. He has class - drinking from a real ceramic cup, not plastic, paper or Styrofoam. Along with class, he's concerned about the environment, and plastic pollution.
I think he's very handsome. I like his hat, and his shirt. Perhaps he has sewn the knee patches on his jeans. It doesn't mean he's poor or homeless. He likes those jeans and is thrifty. My kind of guy. I would happily sit beside him.

Heartbreak has turned to rage in Israel. Can Benjamin Netanyahu survive the biggest challenge to his rule?

"Israelis are once again venting their anger over the failure of the government to reach a deal to release the hostages still being held by Hamas in Gaza.

"Hundreds of thousands of protesters have taken to the streets across the country over the past couple days, with some gathering outside the homes of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the US embassy. The first nationwide strike since last Octoberโ€™s Hamas attack also brought the country to a standstill.

"The spark for the protests was the discovery of the bodies of six hostages who had been executed by Hamas shortly before Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) located them. On Monday, Netanyahu issued a rare apology to the families."

I've read two of those (both 15+ years ago)! The contrast between the tone of Luria's autobiography and Watson's The Double Helix couldn't be more stark.
in reply to siobain

@siobain i read that one too - pretty bad in several ways. What Mad Pursuit by Crick gives a much better firsthand account, I think.

A team of scientists from the University of Bristol recently released research that pushed the date of our Last Universal Common Ancestor (LUCA) back to about 4.2 billion years ago.

This suggests that the life that is in each of us, and in each of the organisms that make up our very large extended family, runs in an unbroken chain backward for 4.2 billion years.

Thatโ€™s a pretty considerable investment by the universe in every living thing.

Perhaps we should reflect on that a little more as we continue to muck around on this planet.

It might be time to start fitting in.

Some material experiments with mycelium substrate growing in sawdust and flour, to make fungi sculptures from moulds.

I am using a proprietary mix from the Dutch company Kineco kineco.bio/, although I know I can potentially make this myself with some spores and sawdust.

Will report back in about 7 days with whatever comes of these.

@Fionnรกin This looks like very interesting work. Are the human made elements still going to be functional sometimes, like mycelial music and sounds on that speaker?

@jrp that's the plan. I haven't tested the speaker yet. I have some insulated wire running through others that should hopefully be fine, like the one pictured.

Will keep updating this thread with the results!

And this is why I don't use apps on my phone! Especially for Facebook and Twitter, they're data-scraping privacy-invading hellholes.
in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

@Gargron This article is based off of information that was originally making rounds in 2016. In 8 years since, there was never **any concrete evidence** showing that they can actually do this. None.

Considering that adtech is rife with fraud (to the tune of $billions swindled from advertisers annually), a more likely explanation is that this is just a bunch of grifters with a pitch deck looking to score off of gullible advertisers.

What is this marketing though?

Like gtfo, you're building off of Valve's work, you even reference Lutris and Heroic Games Launcher and claim that SteamOS is 'Compatible with Steam only' and 'Locked to the Valveverse' like what?

I'm not even saying that a gaming distro not tied to Valve's ecosystem is a bad thing, but the desperation to paint SteamOS as on par with Windows is absurd.
