@Aladár Mézga Also, we have traditionally paid our workers here better wages than many other places. So, the glass itself may not cost all that much.

ChatGPT woke us up to the possibilities that that come from generating text. Claude Code is now doing the same thing for tools. I wrote about five things I built with it to help me as a writer platformer.news/claude-code-fo…
in reply to Casey Newton

Sounds interesting!

I image the Claude agent would need LOTS of access to the host system/local PC with open 'Net access to accomplish this?

The functionality sounds useful but I worry about giving a semi-autonomous agent with potential back doors that much access to my PC/laptop.

Perhaps a separate clean PC or a virtual host would help contain this security problem?

in reply to Robert Smith

@robertsmith totally. I have made mistakes.

I think the best practice is to run it in a container.

Product Manager here. We are building some interesting tooling at my work using Github CoPilot. Agents that check the consistency of our decisions against (1) existing work in JIRA and (2) high level strategy of our leadership. We have a massive product portfolio, and so far it is an amazing "rubber duck" for product folks to collaborate with other groups without constant sync sessions.

I’m hoping one of my former colleagues in the briefing room will ask the press secretary why the White House is again propagating phrasing of a white supremacist author who praises Hitler and traffics in antisemitic conspiracy theories.

@Gargron I mean, we all know it but it would be really great for someone to outright say it in that setting, publicly, to their faces.

“This is your monthly payment reminder.” 💰 Subscription fatigue is real. Why pay when you can self-host?

Self-hosting open source apps can save €40+/month while giving you privacy & control.
And yes, Nextcloud is one of the top choices 💙

👇 webpronews.com/2025-self-hosti…

in reply to Nextcloud 📱☁️💻

That's also how open source maintainers burn out. The sentiment that open source == free is terrible for the industry at large. I'd rather _pay_ the open source developer than hope for the best for maintenance. You should look at this differently: You can pay $40/month and give up control/privacy _or_ you can pay $40/month and retain it (perpetually). Which one is better? If you only care about $ you'll happily give up privacy/control anyways.

My first public vibecoding experiment is live! Try Stash, a read-it-later app that is free, open-source, and does what Pocket (RIP) did, plus some new features like text-to-speech, Kindle sync and dark mode.

Four commodities cause most #deforestation: #beef #palmoil #soy #wood and #paper products. Causing the loss of 5 mill ha each year. Organised #crime is another invisible key driver. Take action! #BoycottPalmOil #Boycott4Wildlife @palmoildetect.bsky.social palmoildetectives.com/2022/02/…
in reply to Palm Oil Detectives

Just a note that less than 5% of soy production is for human consumption (soy beans, tofu, tempeh, soy milk, etc. excluding vegetable oil). The rest is used for direct and processed animal feed (~75%), biofuels (~4%), and vegetable oil (~14%)

So, folks can keep eating soy and soy products, but best to avoid soy cooking oil, and reduce or eliminate animal consumption.

"A concept known as the Szilard point helps to contextualize the issues arising from excessive competition for grants. Named after the Hungarian-born physicist Leo Szilard, who wrote a short story [1] satirizing the bureaucratic nature of scientific funding, this metric describes the threshold at which the total cost of competing for a grant equals (or surpasses) the value of the available funding. These costs are incurred by scientists in writing proposals, by their peers in reviewing them and by the administrative systems that run the process. The question is, which costs more: the research being funded, or the application process itself?"

An example: some years ago, a friend, easily 40 years older than me, told me the following story. With a role as treasurer of the Erasmus program that organises and, critically, funds undergraduate exchanges between universities in Europe, upon running the numbers, realised the following: that the stipendiary, travelling, and hotel expenses of the committee members equalled or slightly surpassed the entirety of the funds allocated to the students themselves for the year. Many uhms and ahs were raised, yet, the next year no invitation arrived to continue as treasurer ...

Oooh, FINALLY! Great news!

That was probably the biggest reason I wasn't able to make it work with a simple RPi desktop machine, I need ONLYOFFICE to work with Word documents, and LibreOffice sadly has issues with more complex files (which have caused data loss in the past, so I'm weary of using it for Office files).

I might need to revisit the RPi desktop project...

OnlyOffice isn't FOSS, they bend the GPL to prevent forking.

No need to fear dual booting—Linux and Windows can play well together!

itsfoss.com/dual-boot-myths/

in reply to It's FOSS

OK, but... that's been a thing for at least 20 years. More remarkable, I think, is that , even with many hardware manufacturers STILL not publishing Linux drivers or publicizing Linux compatibility, Linux devs continue to make it possible to take new PC hardware and install Linux on it and have all the important things work. In the nearly 30 years I've been running Linux, i have never felt any impulse to "dual boot". Obviously, your mileage may vary, but... seriously?

A Caring Economy Requires Building Bridges—Not Burning Them

...One of Ai-jen Poo’s role models is Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who understood very well the advantages of combative organizing models as well as the power of joining with your one-time enemies to build bridges toward change. Now, in the shadow of the civil rights era, as opponents of fairness and justice rev up with increasing hatred and vitriol, a new generation of organizers—notably led by women of color—is innovating new approaches to organizing that borrow from these deep and old notions of community and love. They point the way forward toward a future that is better for all through a politics and practice that potentially engages everyone in achieving change.

And that's how people get strong.
