Indigenous Aid Request (SSSM) :boost_ok:

The South Sound Street Medics (SSSM) are an Indigenous-led group who actively work in social justice movements and with underserved communities by providing free immediate medical care. The SSSM are trying to respond to a call to aid the Winnemucca Indian Colony, supporting their fight to protect their land and homes. The funds will be used to rent a car to both travel and transport elders in need of medical attention.

Food

My Beat Saber workout was shit this morning, but I did make my favorite dinner rolls. These take about 4 hr for me to put together (I mix milk from powder, so I have a little extra prep) and have been delicious from my very first attempt at them: youtu.be/Rosj1ZlLGlU

Unfortunately, this is one his few recipes that he doesn't have written up anywhere. If anyone wants it, I've written it out in a way that I only need to refer to the video if I need a technique reminder, and I can post it.

For today’s #fruitLoaf I went back to all plain flour for a change, and used Angus Park Fruit Medley (apricots, apple, sultanas, peaches and pears). #breadPosting #bread #pane

Snake - pretty, but venomous.

Found this Eastern Small-eyed Snake tonight under the house.

Very chill fellow, which we left alone (apart from a quick photoshoot).

Highly venomous (mytotoxic) with one recorded death in the greater brisbane area (probably quite some time ago, the Qld Museum book doesn't specify).

Dessert is sorted for later tonight. Apple pie x ricotta cheesecake. #pie #food

in reply to David de Groot 𓆉

The pie inside. Worked pretty well. I think 6 apples instead of four might have been better, and while the 25% rye flour in the pastry was a nice change, a lighter full white pastry might have suited better. #dessert #pie

Yoooo, so I'm playing in a spy thriller RPG mini-campaign that uses Rosette Diceless (designed by @gregoryaveryweir and me!). The first session is starting in just a few minutes over at twitch.tv/otherdoc

Wow, this paper looks super interesting

tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.10…

A patchwork of platforms: mapping data infrastructures in schools, by Luci Pangrazio, Neil Selwyn & Bronwyn Cumbo

From the abstract:
This paper explores the significance of schools’ data infrastructures as a site of institutional power and (re)configuration

Taking an institutional perspective, the paper explores why digital technologies continue to complicate (rather than simplify) school processes and practices.

#edtech

in reply to Rafa Gálvez

I guess data infrastructure is kinda nebulous so I don't really know what systems are being discussed.

Moodle is a software for online learning (like Blackboard) so has tools for students to use forums, evaluations, readings, etc. Teachers can collect information about how the materials are being engaged with and communicate to students etc. Data in Moodle (courses, grades, users) can be exported and development is open source so there is an open discussion of features.

in reply to Danny (he/they)

I know Moodle from my undergraduate and master's in Madrid, we used it at University Carlos III de Madrid. I personally didn't find it specially useful, it was more of a repository of documents than any other thing but it's true that's already a few years ago.

In this paper they don't talk about Moddle, but they do say that schools preferred "professional" tooling coming from the corporate world, which are assumed to be more effective because there is a market for them.

Saludos!

“Quick butter chicken” recipe from Gewürzhaus. Look, it’s nice, but it’s nothing like any butter chicken I’ve ever had before. Half a kilo of coconut cream, for starters. Turmeric, cumin, coriander. Mmmno. Delicious though. Just not butter chicken.

I do love Gewürzhaus, but I'd not go to them for Indian. Germanic and other European, definitely, Asian and Indian, not so much.

When we visit relo's in the Parramatta region I always visit the big Indian markets there, so many things I know nothing about but buy anyway at very reasonable prices. 😀

Mother of all evil is speculation. Once again proven, people do everything because selfish reasons. Not all of course but the ones who quickly want to become rich.

What’s this? Another ambitious project? Sure why not?!

I fully expect to make a complete hash of this but let’s see how we go eh?

in reply to David de Groot 𓆉

I’ve cut out the shell guard and thumb ring sheet from some stainless steel I had lying around. I have a plan to form a tool to help with adding the flutes to the shell. I also have a piece of 100+ year old wrought iron for the quillions.
#blacksmith #metalwork #cutless #sword
in reply to David de Groot 𓆉

Am thinking I might reprofile that blade. The bend is too short and in the wrong spot. I need to heat it back up anyway to get some of the kinks out before grinding.
in reply to David de Groot 𓆉

After some more research, I found my blade length was too long. I had a 30” blade, but typical cutlasses and hangars were only 30” total length including hilt. So I’ve trimmed the tip and re-profiled the shape.
#blacksmith #metalwork #cutless #sword #BeMorePirate
in reply to David de Groot 𓆉

More progress. Forged in the bevels on the tip, straightened and flattened the whole blade. Forged the quillions and dished the shell guard.
Still need to slot the quillions and guard and clean everything up and do a LOT of grinding.

in reply to David de Groot 𓆉

Tang burnt through the handle material. A lot of naval cutlasses had cast iron or brass handles as they son’t swell on a ship like wood or bone but this one isn’t going to sea, and I don’t have casting facilities anyway.
Since I also don’t have long thing drill bits, I used the more tradition method of heating the tang and pushing it through the wood.
#sword #cutlass #blacksmith
in reply to David de Groot 𓆉

Shaped the handle this arvo. Tossing up between twisted wire or leather thongs in the sorriso grooves.

in reply to David de Groot 𓆉

heh, I just assumed it was some technical term known only to masters of some obscure craft I knew nothing about. 😁
in reply to Mike [SEC=OFFICIAL]

I did consider leaving it and just taking that line, but I'm sure someone out there would notice and call me on it 😉
in reply to David de Groot 𓆉

I’m leaning towards the wire. I’ve twisted some two tone wire which I think looks ok. I could twist it on itself to make it thicker, or fill the groove with clear epoxy once the wire is in place.

#sword #cutlass #blacksmith

in reply to David de Groot 𓆉

random thought - if the wire sticks out, would it give you a callous? just thinking of the weight and actually using it! Decoratively it looks good!
in reply to Laura Ritchie 🌸

At the moment, the wire is very much inset in the grooves. If I double the thickness, by twisting on itself, I don't think it'd protrude from the groove either, but would fill the groove better than the current thickness.
So I *think* I should be ok either way.
in reply to David de Groot 𓆉

Double thickness wire. Fills the slots a bit better and provides a little extra grip. #sword #cutlass
in reply to David de Groot 𓆉

Roughed out a pommel. Two piece construction, very experimental, hope it works. Can’t test fully until the rest of the piece is completely finished.
Don’t worry about the poor fit, it’s just sitting there at the moment.

#sword #cutlass

in reply to David de Groot 𓆉

I love watching this, but can we see more of the tools? Particularly interested to see your lathe(s).
in reply to Matthew "Smiffy" Smith

good question. He must have built it in either the 70s or 80s at a guess. Maybe earlier but I don’t think so.
Dad might know. Will have to see if I can remember to ask.
in reply to David de Groot 𓆉

More blade cleanup today. It’s down to 500g now so I can’t take any more off, except for some light sanding and the final sharpen. Still needs heat treating too.

#cutlass #sword #blacksmith #metalwork #BeMorePirate

in reply to David de Groot 𓆉

I’m up to the shellac stage of the grip. It’s had one coat of red oil, three of Tung oil, and three of seedlac (veg based shellac). I’ll probably do a few more coats and let it properly harden before polishing.
#cutlass #sword #blacksmith #woodwork
in reply to David de Groot 𓆉

Test fit time!

Actually fits together fairly well, weight distribution is such that the balance point is 5cm in front of the guard, making for a very lively sword. Total weight is 1.2kg or about the same as my rapier (which is considerably longer).

The blade still needs heat treating and then I have all the fiddly bits in the fit up to secure everything.
#sword #cutlass #BeMorePirate #blacksmith

in reply to David de Groot 𓆉

Well it took quite a while, but I'm calling this one done.

Here is my very first #cutlass modelled on the Dutch style from around the 1680s.

It is, by no means perfect, but the fit-up is pretty tight, and it is functionally sharp.

(iphone photos, will do some better ones later)

#blacksmith #metalwork #sword

in reply to David de Groot 𓆉

Not too bad a cut. Maybe could have been marginally closer to get the back of the cut a bit cleaner, although that was probably just bad technique on my part.

#blacksmith #cutlass #test

in reply to David de Groot 𓆉

Loved reading the journey of you forging/crafting this. If I can ask, how come so long between the test-fitting and finishing it?
in reply to Trisha Lynn 🇵🇭 🇺🇸 🇨🇦

I had to build a long forge to heat treat the blade. And a long quench tank. Both of which involved me learning rudimentary stick welding.
in reply to Trisha Lynn 🇵🇭 🇺🇸 🇨🇦

Yep 😀

The whole thing was a series of learning processes, which is kinda why I did it (ok, so pirate cutlasses are pretty awesome in their own right, but I totally did it to learn stuff) 😉
