❓ How accurately can we predict diverse #bacteriophage bacteria-interactions from their #genomes only ?

🦠 We created a matrix of >38k #phage-#bacteria interactions to find out (=> AUROC 86%) & used our predictions to recommend tailored phage cocktails.

Predicting which phages infect which specific strains would allow to better fight bacterial infections and understand #microbial ecology.

@foaylward I think they weren't big fans of each other after the voyage, kind of developed apart. FitzRoy wasn't a fan of evolution either

Christopher Nolan says that there is a danger in having content only exist in a streaming format, that physical media is the only way to hedge against its disappearance from public access in the future.

I've long advocated for owning music in particular (as much as ownership exists these days) in part from the financial standpoint of paying into a collection that isn't anchored to a streaming platform. Hadn't thought about the existential issue of streaming-only content

We need to be really clear: the bonkers part of OpenAI circa a week ago was not that a nonprofit was involved. That model works fine—think companies from Bosch to Zeiss: purpose-economy.org/en/file/36…

The bonkers part is the utter disconnection between the purpose and the pragmatics, and that the purpose was in the hands of unaccountable ideologues. Now it is in the hands of unaccountable pragmatists.

This entry was edited (2 years ago)
in reply to Nathan Schneider

This is why accountability is key. Most companies solve this the wrong way: accountability to external profiteers, because at least that is something, even though it is basically psychotic.
in reply to Nathan Schneider

So what would a better kind of accountability look like?

How about to those workers, who know the tech better than anyone? Ginkgo Bioworks, for instance, has invested both in a strong culture of employee ethics and in a controlling stake for employee stock. It's a public company.

This entry was edited (2 years ago)
in reply to Nathan Schneider

How about the users, the people who are paying for AI tech and who have a stake in it not turning on them? Maybe subscribers should have a vote on board members. Not crazy.
in reply to Nathan Schneider

How about a set of organizations that represent communities that have historically been harmed by AI? Like the AFL CIO, the NAACP, and SEIU? Those could pick some board members who aren't weird EAs but are actually grounded in the experience of working people today.
in reply to Nathan Schneider

We need ethical governance for powerful technologies. But not unaccountable-elite governance.

There are SO MANY better options than OpenAI last week or OpenAI this week. Don't make the mistake of getting caught up in those.

in reply to Nathan Schneider

Man, a Zeiss for public-interest AI would be amazeballs.

So much badness flows from the desire for massive up-front investment and rapid early growth.

Day 6: Ten Days, Ten Films.

This is a lot of fun! So long as I don’t make this too hard or too easy!
Over ten days you pick an image from a film without any title to give away where it is from, so that people can guess. You can also nominate others to do the same. That way more people are in on the game! (or not–your choice 😀 )

But remember: NO SPOILERS! If you recognise a film, don’t say what it is! Say something that indicates you know, but allows others to guess as well. Your messages then become helpful hints!

#Socialcoop friends, we in the Finance Working Group invite you to join us in working together on a cohesive budget for the co-op! loomio.com/d/liwtX0qd/toward-a…
in reply to Nathan Schneider

I'm struggling to get into (i.e. understand ) #socialcoop governance. Not that I have tried very hard... I haven't seen an opportunity where it's clearly useful for me to dig in.

I could really use more stories.

Is there a good presentation (video recording) of the organization as a whole?

Is the origin story written down? The story of why the org was created and why it's growing.

in reply to Dan Connolly

Are there formative events boiled down to story form? The "should we federate with Facebook's thing?" is the only one that comes to mind.
in reply to Dan Connolly

and while I saw lots of little pieces of the decision happen, I don't know the overall story arc.

I don't even know what the decision was, where it's recorded, nor the governance structure through which it emerged.

The analog of the "I'm just a bill..." song but not for U.S. legislation but for #socialcoop decisions.

in reply to Nathan Schneider

yes... let's see... origin story: check:
> Social.coop was founded in 2017 in the wake of the BuyTwitter campaign.

I think I learned that at some point but forgot.

in reply to Dan Connolly

What does TKTK DATE mean? that the wiki page has the text of the agreement but the executed agreement is elsewhere?

> Ratified TKTK DATE in solidarity,
>
> Platform 6 Co-operative, Ltd.
>
> Social.coop

in reply to Dan Connolly

I think part of my struggle was a vaguely negative impression of loomio.

I think I ran into "access denied" many times... I think because I had let something lapse.

Anyway... that seems sorted now.

The daily email digests are pretty overwhelming, though.

in reply to Dan Connolly

Is there a way to participate *in between* just being a user of the hosted fediverse server and reading every message on loomio?

Any recommended way to get up to speed on current events?

I was kinda impressed when I learned that Maker DAO puts explicit resources into outreach to its voters.

vote.makerdao.com/?network=mai…

in reply to Dan Connolly

@dckc great point. We are currently moving toward a more focused governance model. But still, our model is pretty centered on assuming people will step up and participate. We should be more intentional about guiding members' attention. (I am writing a paper on that now!)

Now I think we are caught in a trap where the leaders are the people who stepped up to lead, and they don't sympathize enough with those who haven't similarly stepped up.

in reply to Dan Connolly

does social.coop have any regular rhythms? Weekly / monthly get-togethers?

I see a diagram with a future section with office hours and quarterly meetings. Is that future here at all yet?

Robinson Meyer at Heatmap does a decent job of connecting the dots between the OpenAI governance meltdown to the larger paradoxes of nonprofit board governance and how that affects social movements.

mailchi.mp/heatmap/republicanf…

in reply to Jon Stahl

- yeah, that's my take too. It's a good critique of general nonprofit governance. And it's right.

Governance is one of the world's most pressing issues. Despite its many problems, Web3 has a lot of interesting experiments (e.g.: medium.com/block-science/intro…). This is where most of the interesting innovation is happening right now.

cc: @ntnsndr

in reply to gideonro

Thanks for sharing this. I totally agree that the Skocpol analysis is super important—the shift from community accountability to board accountability.

But to be clear, the upshot of Skocpol is NOT OpenAI; it is that the accountability shifts from stakeholders to funders. If you're on a normal nonprofit board (I am on several), you are sailing on a very narrow tack, trying to keep funders, employees, and other allies happy.

in reply to Nathan Schneider

@gideonro @thinkling In that sense, I think the problems would be best understood as:

- OpenAI is a nonprofit with an unusual misalignment between its economics and its mission; usually the two are much more aligned through mission-focused funders

- Nonprofits in general usually have the problem of being overly accountable to funders because they are beholden to a constant flow of short-term grants

in reply to Nathan Schneider

@ntnsndr @thinkling
Agreed. This tension btwn money & mission runs through the heart of most governance challenges.

Thought of you because @christina mentioned to me yesterday that you are doing an innovative process for deep diving into governance.

in reply to Nathan Schneider

@ntnsndr @gideonro “the accountability shifts from stakeholders to funders” — I think you have to be more clear about when this happens. It’s true if the choice is made at founding of the org and no doubt can be true for conversion. My (limited) experience is with an org that went from membership based and very limited in execution power, to board-only, more professional staff, and funding split between programmatic grants and membership/donations from a broad base.

¿Hi there @Friendica Developers, can you please take the theme VIER immediately out of the branches stable and RC!

It doesn't even display the [abstract] bbCode properly and right now literally I have no clue how many hours of my life I spend the last month documenting bugs that might be just because that theme doesn't work.

My mind is raging and I just jumped out of the window, lucky me that I live on ground level so every thing is fine as of now, but please, this is disheartening!
thx
