The Same Color Illusion

ok, there are illusions but they are not arbitrary as your discussion implies. I your example, the brightness, not color, illusion is due to the surrounding intensities and how the visual system emphasizes relative ove absolute intensity. Necessary as most objects only reflect light and relative intensity is what is more important than absolute intensity. So this illusion illustrates a visual strength not weakness.

Disasters do show who people really are. There are ordinary heroes who step up and make things better, and some who take advantage for their own gain. Disasters are great for helping us find out which is which.

Long-term disasters, like the ones we hear about all the time at school and on the news, are probably less able to show us who people really are. And the number of heroes is certainly a lot less now.

in reply to Muse

"And the number of heroes is certainly a lot less now."

That is really hard to know. Maybe.

Major media has been concentrated into a few hands, and we mostly hear the stories they want to tell, rather than the wide diversity of stories that are happening all the time. Outside of those media we then have an overwhelming multiplicity of voices online, and it can be hard to know who you can trust. This is a subject I was called upon to lecture about at a university.

We also have a problem with how people define heroism. Is it only those people who do big things for which the media repeatedly praises them? Perhaps it's many lesser known people who are willing to do helpful things day in and day out, like nurses, paramedics, volunteer firefighters, a neighbour who puts themselves in danger in order to help another neighbour, school teachers who face down shooters at the cost of their lives, someone who plants hundreds of trees without ever knowing if they will grow to help reverse the climate crisis.

My iTunes copy of Aliens was updated to the new #4K remaster and I'm so disappointed. They scrubbed it of all that beautiful grain and made it unnaturally sharp. I loved the grainy grittiness of Aliens. Left is my #BluRay copy, right is iTunes.

Twitter used to be our main marketing tool--the primary way we sold books online and got the word out.

These days, not so much.

Please help support us and our authors with a signal boost! We are an independent publisher based in Chennai with books on folklore from different parts of India, graphic novels, ghost encyclopedias, weird horror, pulp fiction in translation, and some pretty strange little zines.

My feeds are filled with people who have COVID right now.

Please test before you get together with friends and family (especially vulnerable people like those with diabetes or those over 65) and stay home if you have symptoms.

In the U.S., you can still get four free tests at special.usps.com/testkits

And if you've stopped wearing a mask while you're out running errands, it's a good time to start again.

A block from my house police are currently responding to a bomb threat at the East Lansing synagogue.

In June, the FBI discovered a young man planned to carry out a mass shooting there with “hand-made pipe bombs, molotovs, two Stag-15s, 12 guage shotgun & two back up Glock 18s & a Akm full auto conversion.” lansingstatejournal.com/story/…

On Feb 13, our MSU campus experienced a mass shooting.

This isn’t normal.

I wonder if the Mastodon’s hashtags are case sensitive, @Gargron ?

So, accounts on #Threads will have to opt-in to #federation with #Mastodon and the #Fediverse.

threads.net/@mosseri/post/C051…

Correct me, if I'm wrong, but doesn't that change the whole debate here? Only a small part of #Threads user base will do that. The majority doesn't know about the #Fediverse, and won't care.

But that also means that there won't be a flood of content/accounts/stuff from Threads here in the Fediverse. For the most part, both will stay separated.

in reply to Martin Holland

in reply to Eugen Rochko

in reply to benny windolph

in reply to Eugen Rochko

in reply to Eugen Rochko

in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron @benny

This is actually wild, I didn't think we'd be seeing open source NVIDIA drivers be viable in games for a long time

Source: twitter.com/Plagman2/status/17…

in reply to Justin

@justin Think of it like this, when you buy a new GPU it will be viable
in reply to Brodie Robertson

100% because my next GPU won't be NVIDIA. Will take a fair bit of time to wash that stink off.

That's incredible! Linux graphics developers are incredible.

As an aside, what would it take to get Pierre-Loup to jump over to Mastodon? Would love to follow him and other game dev folks on... any other platform.

@Kenny Chaffin A friend on Facebook recommended it to me. People need to understand the insides of these things in order to understand why their software functions in the manner it does. Somebody with a viewpoint made decisions that will affect us all. It's a shame I didn't have this article while I was lecturing at La Trobe.
