Just had time to catch up with the news. Before it gets lost in hue and cry about shots fired at the Trump golf course, I urge you to attend to the news of Chief Justice John Roberts’ unusual and aggressive efforts to protect Donald Trump from criminal prosecution. The New York Times broke the store, here nytimes.com/2024/09/15/us/just… (gift link) and the Daily Beast recaps it here flip.it/Wp7VPv .
The reporting doesn’t quite capture the significance of what Roberts did. 1/
Molecular mimicry of a pathogen virulence target by a plant immune receptor (OA)
botany.fyi/54tloa
Gómez De La Cruz et al report that a plant NLR has evolved the capacity to bind to a pathogen effector by acting as a molecular mimic of a virulence target of the effector, thereby triggering an immune response.

Recently watched the movie The Fall Guy. LOVED IT! It's a very Jackie Chan style comedy action film. One of the songs they play in the sound track is by The Darkness. This band is sooo Spinal Tap for real. Anyway, I'm putting this link up especially for @Christoph S, since we were talking about it, and I think he would like it.

"We fly lots, and we say that we shouldn't,” says Jonas De Vos, a transport geographer at University College London (UCL) and the first author of the latest study. “We are hypocrites.”

The standard wisdom is that academic careers, especially early, are harmed when academics don't jet around the world for in-person meetings. This article suggests that the importance of this travel is overstated, while the carbon cost is clear.

Academics say flying to meetings harms the climate — but they carry on
A survey at one of the biggest UK research universities finds that staff often end up flying to meetings despite a preference to avoid air travel.Soliman, Alix

Microsoft Windows kernel changes don't suddenly mean big things for Linux gaming
There's a lot of blog posts and news articles being written right now centred around Microsoft's plans for updates to Windows 11, and potential kernel changes, with some thinking this means big things for Linux gaming.Liam Dawe (GamingOnLinux)

@Gargron oh yes, I do too miss the physical process very much. I never experienced the adaptive choral/rising soundtrack natively (can't remember now what conditions had to be met,) but every time I think about it/hear it, I get immediately emotional remembering how purely/wholesomely exciting consumer technology was going to be.
...and later, guilty, because I absolutely got to live that genuinely democratizing/freely educating moment and was given *so* much more than I've put back in.

Decentralization is somewhere over there... way over there... in the distance... far from any of our videos.

Exciting. I've successfully set up AIO yesterday. I'm surprised by the low memory usage even during video calls.
But I feel bad when I basic functionalities like extracting or compressing a file still missing.

So I wrote this little component. If the JS for the component didn’t load for some reason, the form will work normally based on submit. If the custom element loads, though, it will watch for change events on the form, and sync the entity in the current context based on the context name (so, the current PC in this case) through fetch() and preventDefault on the submit event since we’re syncing on every change instead.
No shadow DOM, fully progressively enhanced, and works off my generic entity system so any entity will just work. 😎
