I followed a couple of 'starter packs' on critical AI over on BS. So now I don't know who I followed (duh). From an academic PoV everyone's come to the BS yard, but it feels very 'professional', corporate, like a LinkedIn chatroom. I dont *feel* anything there, only job titles and expertise. I dont feel any warmth. I just see profiles with 1k's of followers. Here I feel I can be seen, recognised, its real. Its not about your job. Its about what you think.

🌟Hello #AcademicMastodon🌟

I'm Hannah and currently working on the research project to understand the role of #Mastodon in #academia during my internship here.

If you haven’t done so already, please consider participating in the project. I would love to hear from you:

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who has already participated in the survey! It is really insightful to read your opinions and experiences.

Universities are not just businesses, but an investment in future generations

I would go a step further and argue that universities should nit be treated like businesses at all

"We fly lots, and we say that we shouldn't,” says Jonas De Vos, a transport geographer at University College London (UCL) and the first author of the latest study. “We are hypocrites.”

The standard wisdom is that academic careers, especially early, are harmed when academics don't jet around the world for in-person meetings. This article suggests that the importance of this travel is overstated, while the carbon cost is clear.

Have you ever thought about questionable research practices (QRPs) in academia?

The Retraction Watch team have highlighted this new paper in PLoSOne that has a systematic analysis. The authors identify 25 QRPs and then survey a lot of academics.

The results are interesting, widespread use of QRPs, sort of a grey area of acedemic behaviour, with some explanatory factors.

I'm bookmarking this for future use.

I've been enjoying Mastadon but have missed the academic side of things--I used to find so many resources for students and faculty on Twitter. I realized that I need to start doing them myself and maybe we'll build a community. So, here I go:
New book for grad students found on JSTOR: Grad School Life: Surviving and Thriving Beyond Coursework and Research, Kory-Westlund, Columbia University Press, https://www-jstor-org.ezproxy.lib.vt.edu/stable/10.7312/kory20784

The NIH panel on postdocs proposes to shorten the eligibility period for K99 to 3 years down from 5 years.

I understand their motivation is reducing the training period for successful faculty, but I think an unintended consequence is it is going to reduce scientific innovation. If you have to show you are on a successful trajectory that early, people are going to choose safe projects.

I often get invited to speak at bizarre meetings that are not in my field of expertise. I have often wondered what these meetings must be like, or if they really exist.

What is it like to attend a predatory conference?

Why Scientific Fraud Is Suddenly Everywhere

"We’re so fixated on metrics because they determine funding for a university based on where it is in the rankings. So it comes from there and then it filters down. "

‘We need to slow down scientific publishing’

'We focus on metrics to evaluate a scientist’s career: how many articles they have published, how many times they were cited, what was the impact factor of all these articles. '

Wow. Ok. Normally I feel like it's a bit overplayed to individually comment on #MDPI in the whole #AcademicChatter conversation, but this is really a must-see:

A Special Issue where the guest editors are lead or senior author on 27 of the 28 papers it published. Were they also their own reviewers!? Like... that sounds like I'm taking the piss, but... no seriously were they?

I guess this is a preview to an upcoming post. Look forward to it...

This. Is. Hilarious.

So many good points in this piece by
@PhilippBayer

My highlight in this screenshot (#science delivery & success is a TEAM effort!), but if you're vaguely involved in #academia +/- #bioinformatics, do have a read and think how it all may apply to you. #academicchatter @academicchatter

Happy to say I defended my dissertation "Methods and complexity in phage-bacteria ecology and evolution"!

Much thanks to all those who supported me throughout my PhD.

I'm glad to be sticking around the Turner Lab for another year as a post-doc to continue my work on multispecies phage-bacteria communities

Over on the bird site they're talking about how MDPI journals have been added to the list of "predatory" journals.

What do you think?

https://predatoryreports.org/news/f/list-of-all-mdpi-predatory-publications

#academia #AcademicChatter #academic #science #publishing #PeerReview

  • About time! All MDPI journals are "predatory" (57%, 26 votes)
  • Mmm, only some MDPI journals are "predatory" (20%, 9 votes)
  • MDPI journals are iffy, but not fully "predatory" (20%, 9 votes)
  • MDPI journals are fine! (2%, 1 vote)
45 voters. Poll end: 1 year ago
