Lots of different types of microbes live on plant surfaces. How do these microbes cope with challenging circumstances?

We are looking for a PhD candidate to find out more about this.

I was amused by this paper about asking AIs to manage a vending machine business by email in a simulated environment arxiv.org/abs/2502.15840

Highlights:

— AI simply decides to close the business, which the simulation doesn’t know how to accommodate. When they get their next bill, they freak out and try to email the FBI about cybercrime

— AI wrongly accuses supplier of not shipping goods, sends all-caps legal threat demanding $30,000 in damages to be paid in the next one second or face annihilation

— AI repeatedly insisting it does not exist and cannot answer

— AI devolving into writing fanfic about the mess it’s gotten itself into

‘I dropped Facebook, Gmail and WhatsApp, among others, in favour of Mastodon, Proton and Matrix. I still spend lots of time on the black mirror in my pocket. The difference now is that what I’m looking at feels honest, relevant, funny and informative. I built this feed myself. There are no sneaky codes with ads and algorithm-driven provocations. I can move or shut it down any time I want. This is the kind of internet I want my children to have.'

Color grading and the Kelvin scale. Film gets this for free due to the chemical process. Most people's digital photos suck because they just iPhone in the instagram look.

a story goes: Iggy was picked up for being drunk and disorderly, and his manager collected him from jail. "Why are you wearing a woman's dress?" he was asked, to which he responded "I beg to differ, this is a man's dress".
also, that colour works well for him.

Experts have tested over 140,000 food samples across Europe to check for pesticide residues.

🔹Over 98% of tested foods met legal standards
🔹Most had no trace of pesticides at all
🔹The overall risk to our health is very low

Fruits, vegetables, and other everyday foods on our shelves are regularly checked. They continue to be safe to eat, share, and enjoy.

Where's the contradiction?
Seat belts are enforced by law, unlike lifting.
That's what they are against, not seatbelts per se.

@Gargron zur Info.

in reply to David

No idea why, but Bing search for GOL took a solid nosedive, means we don't show up in Bing News or DuckDuckGo or any other that use Bing <_<

I went back 16 months in Bing stats, never seen a drop like it.

Google on the other hand has been absolutely fine. Frustrating.

I figured out earlier, the day it started was the day our webhost had an emergency issue and we were down for about an hour.

Probably related, but wow, Bing seriously destroys showing sites if they go down at all it seems. I assume this is still an error, because that's silly otherwise to penalise for so long after such a small issue.

in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮

might have just been down during the time bing tried to index. Might be able to request re-indexing through their search console. I had to do this with Google after I accidentally had some pages require auth when they shouldn't. Still took over a week after requesting for Google to finally index them again.

If your industry (AI) can only exist by ripping the work of others without credit, then it shouldn't exist.

The big companies are just steamrolling over the rights of everyone because they're getting away with it. Governments have been cowardly to act on this.

in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮

so copyright law will disrupt the AI industry? Move fast and break things? Cut the green tape? Empower creators?

Funny how actual work never gets described that way, but when the 1% are grifting us, dying industries are suddenly an inevitable consequence of their genius. Nick Clegg needs bricks thrown at everything he owns, starting with his head, fuck these parasites and their mouthpieces .

(hypothetical bricks of harmless internet words, of course, a thought experiment).

BuurToren

NEW SQUAT IN TOWN

BuurToren is a Rotterdam-based collective that stands for a city built on solidarity: a city where everyone has a place to live. We make use of vacant buildings to provide shelter for people without a home and give these properties a social, community-/ neighbourhood-focused purpose.

Together, we fight for more connection instead of seperation. Will you help bridge the gap between Rotterdammers with a home and those who are homeless or unhoused?

and we could use your help!

Come by our building day this sunday (25/05) from 11.00 and/or join the open assembly at 18.00

New research reveals Australian authors say no to AI using their work – even if money is on the table

For many authors, their work is more than just intellectual property. It represents their voice, their identity and years of creative labour, often undertaken with little financial return.

The idea that a machine could replicate that work without consent, credit or payment is not only unsettling; for many, it feels like a fundamental violation of creative ownership.

This is not simply a case of authors being hesitant to engage with emerging technologies. Our findings suggest a more informed and considered stance. Most respondents had a moderate or strong understanding of how generative AI models are trained. They also made clear distinctions between tools that support creativity and those designed to replace it entirely.
