Cool Jobs: Scientific glassblowers shape science

snexplores.org/article/cool-jo…

"Beakers, pipettes, flasks and more. Few people realize that skilled artisans make most scientific glassware by hand (and mouth). This career truly marries art and science. Some people came to glassblowing after training in science. Others started as artists who realized their craft could help advance cutting-edge research"

semi related to prev: the fact that there's a TLD (top level domain; the "dot com" in "example dot com") for both dot theatre and dot theater is so funny. especially since they belong to different companies.

if you want to buy a dot theatre domain, you obviously have to buy the american spelling too, or you'll get domain squatted. and vice versa. you have to pay two different companies for this.

when the beatles quadrilogy releases simultaneously in 2028, there should be one session at a theatre near abbey road that shows all four movies back to back.

after seven hours of film, the combined credits roll. two dozen minutes of slowly scrolling attributions. people are leaving the theatre, but you stay.

fade to black.

the lights haven't turned on yet.

silence and darkness for fifteen seconds.

a lone voice is heard. "room for one more?"

I keep thinking about the answer to the last question in this interview with the architect David Mayernik, calling for public art as iconography rather than propaganda.

Why don't we have statues anymore to Truth and Justice?

I wish I had Linux back on my steamdeck. But because of anti cheat I’m forced with windows, and I don’t think this feature would come to windows, unless the Xbox project for windows adds it.

"Groups emphasize shared infrastructures, hardware longevity, free software, and collective approaches. Challenges include dominant narratives about “unlimited resources,” limited time to experiment, centralized infrastructures and lack of repairable hardware. Hey there!

We do not use Google trackers on our website or blog, please do not worry about that.

As for video content — we have our eye on publishing our videos on PeerTube in the future. We will share an update as soon as we have news. This is a known demand.

And you mentioned notifications. If it is about our apps, please do share an issue on GitHub, suggestions would be invaluable: github.com/nextcloud

"We do not use Google trackers on our website"

I checked with uBlock origin the day I posted that, and it was blocking 2 items from Google. Checking now I see Matomo instead, so thank you.

"we have our eye on publishing our videos on PeerTube in the future"

Why "in the future"? Tilvids confirmed they'd be happy to host you. I've offered to set up YouTube mirroring free of charge. There is no cost to you beyond giving permission, and yet I've been calling with no response for years.

@Montag

in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮

They accuse the petitioners of demanding something that they have never demanded and point out negative effects that will never occur. Why are you doing this? Why doesn't the VGE argue honestly? Are they afraid that if they put forward the real arguments, their business model will collapse?

We are increasingly moving towards a world in which I have to buy a new cooking pot every 2 years because the manufacturer has developed a new model and thus deactivated the old one...

in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮

If people were smart, they would stop buying AAA games, or even better, pirate them, if we can't legally own our games, then might as well go Yarr Harr Harr on their asses

Note: Piracy it's a completely valid way of boycott

This is pretty much why Grimm and I did not have kids.
in reply to Muse

As a professional, the mother of my child made more than I. I became a stay-at-home dad for the first six years of my kid's life because after doing the arithmetic it was the best choice. Mind you, we live in the United States of America where unwealthy lives are utterly disposable and eminently replaceable. Still, we got by while childless C-level a**holes making six figures marveled at how we managed to not only get by but stay out of debt (it's called a spreadsheet, you fscking over-privileged morons.)
