A grainy and blurry, black-and-white macro photograph of a very non-dressy wristwatch. The watch is a reissue of a British dirty dozen field watch from World War II, with their characteristic black face and white numerals, a railroad minutes track and a seconds sub-dial, a fairly bulky bezel and a plain but generously knurled crown. It even has the broad arrow symbol on the dial, blurred and hiding behind the minutes hand.

Refocussing on the tiny lives living in my garden, here's a small sweat bee from a few days ago.

It's known as the common furrow bee or slender mining bee, the Gewöhnliche Schmalbiene in German (Lasioglossum calceatum).

These are the beautiful spore-producing structures of plasmodial slime molds. Which is your favourite colour?

Originally considered Fungi, these Myxomycetes are now classed as Amoebozoans - single celled organisms with thousands of nuclei... not animals or fungi but something else entirely!

Even as the sun slips below the hills to the south, a honeybee's work is not done 🍯

Perhaps not the sharpest of shots, given the rapidly dimming light, but the lovely evening colour mix of the lavender & the defocussed houses & trees on the other side of the valley seems worth sharing 🙇‍♂️

*Slime mould appreciation post*

Slime moulds usually live as single celled organisms, but will occasionally perform an astonishing feat of cooperation - gathering together as a collective ‘organism’ to form structures such as fruiting bodies. They may resemble fungi, but are really a unique group of amoebozoa.

This species of spider beetle is considered a cosmopolitan pest of natural history collections.

This is a close-up of a point-mounted spider beetle (family Ptinidae). The elytra are black and come together to form a large globular shape over the abdomen. The head, legs, pronotum and antennae are covered with dense, golden setae (or hairs), most of which are flattened into scale-like structures.

This is a mosaic gynandromorph. I think bilateral gynandromorph images are shared more frequently—maybe because bilateral gynandromorphs are more obvious? Anyway, females of this species of velvet-ant are almost entirely orange-ish. The black head on this specimen looks like the males of the species. Also, in this family of insects, only males have ocelli (simple eyes) on the top of the head.
