This article is a must read.
An excerpt: βWhy would anyone fund an Atmosphere project if #Bluesky, with $100 million in the bank, might ship a competing feature at any moment? Why would a founder bet their career on this ecosystem? The presentation didn't just hurt Graze. It made the entire ecosystem look unfundable.β
Why do I keep bringing up this topic?
Because #ATproto is often put in the same category as #ActivityPub (βopen protocols yayβ) but I strongly disagree with that stance
WIRED: Would you welcome president Trump if he was debating joining bluesky?
@jay.bsky.team: Yeah, #bluesky is for everyone.
...
I understand that #ATproto should be for everyone, but decentralization means you don't have to allow everyone on your server. They can run their own and everyone can decide how to deal with that. The company doesn't need to make these decisions. She knows this.
I doubt @Gargron would welcome him on #mastodon infrastructure.
Recently there has been a lot of discourse about ActivityPub and AT Protocol which has been quite dividing and heated.
Yesterday at the Social Web CG meeting (the group that maintains the ActivityPub and related specifications), I proposed releasing a statement that counters the narrative that one of these protocols must win, when both protocols can co-exist and have a lot to learn from each other.
The statement has been co-signed by various members of both Social Web CG, SocialCG, and the AT Protocol community.
βWe do not win by tearing each other down, which only emboldens and empowers those who do not want either protocol to succeed.β
βArguing between us only emboldens those that seek to derail and destroy efforts to build an open social web.β

Statement on discourse about ActivityPub and AT Protocol
Foreword This statement was originally published on the swicg/general repository after I had been granted approval to merge.Emelia Smith (Writings of Emelia)
"ATProto does not scale wide: it's a liability to add more fully participating nodes onto the network. Meaningfully self-hosting ATProto is a risk to the ATProto network, there is active reason to disincentivize it for those already participating."

Oof. That is *not* good for the claim that BlueSky's protocol can be as friendly to decentralisation and independent hosting as the fediverse.
IMHO that's game, set and match.
Activitypub or Atproto ... one item that both Mastodon have in common with Bluesky is amount of "spam" links and accounts boosting those "spammy" accounts
Several "award winning art / photo" profiles I saw had 5 or more links including their pinned post
Win goes to Bluesky since they seem to have better control of that ... for now
