10 days ago, while I was putting together the slides for my presentation at Berlin #FediDay, I noticed a new entry in the @cercle directory (the Mastodon instance set up by the Service Numérique of the French Ministry of Culture):

This is the first genuinely operational littleFedi instance.

It has been online since 1st July, is single-user (just me), and runs on a Raspberry Pi Zero W powered by NetBSD, directly on its SD card.

It consumes just under 1W.

Its database is this size:

-rw------- 1 little wheel 109289472 Aug 26 15:14 littlefedi.db

That is, just a little over 100 MB. Yes, MB.

Its average CPU load is extremely low.

It is perfectly usable both from the web interface and from Mastodon API apps.

I have 179 followers and 169 followings, and it doesn't bat an eye.

I promise myself to use it more, and I will.

You don't need Big Tech to communicate with others.

You don't need an expensive data center to exist online.

Because we are people, and the bits are just extensions of our voice.

Frage | Friendica: Wie gut funktioniert das mit der Federation?

Guten Morgen Zusammen 😀 Ich habe mal eine Frage betreffs Federation. Und zwar habe ich gesehen das ich in Sachen Beiträge vor allen via Lemmy Feedback bekomme, aber in den allermeisten Fällen kaum aus dem Rest des Fediverse. Dabei ist mir klar das ich wenn ich in eine Lemmy Community poste, ich recht viele Leute erreiche. Aber das erklärt eben nicht warum aus dem Rest des Fediverse wo ich sehr viel mehr Kontakte habe die mir folgen so wenig zurück bekomme.

Ist Euch ähnliches aufgefallen?

There now is a poll plugin for #WordPress that has full #Fediverse support.

Since a few minutes it is finally officially available on WordPress.org.

A #Plushtodon Posse, all recent immigrants to Canada, are hanging out in a beach area in Ontario. It's not quite speedo weather yet (they are European after all) so they are catching up on their reading. They're also helping out with house sitting chores but with adult supervision because of their height and lack of thumbs. I was investigating the "Channel" feature, and I noticed a channel with the name "Dansk" (Danish). The query is friendica.dk/network?channel=l…

As far as I can see it gives me a list of posts across the #fediverse with a language specification matching my language settings in my profile. For another one of my accounts (with English specified) the channel is called "English".

Is it possible to create a query/URL (so, not a channel per se) that will give me posts based on a specific language code? So something like

friendica.dk/network?language=… (Danish ISO code)
friendica.dk/network?language=… (German ISO code)
friendica.dk/network?language=… (English ISO code)

For u3a.social I'll be doing an upgrade on a test instance as soon as I can and then plan for the live upgrade (I'll also want to switch to native rather than docker database).

The nice thing about test upgrades is you get to test your backups !
