Here's a question for #academia: why shouldn't I count my contributions to major open-source projects which are scientifically relevant (e.g. Linux [1], OpenCV [2]) just like publications?

- They have a unique identifier.
- They are most certainly peer-reviewed (if you don't believe me, try to submit a Linux patch sometime)
- They are archived long-term.
- They are publicly available.

So... where's the difference?

I see no reason why you could not, though perhaps under a different subsection heading similar to what is recommended for reviews vs original research.

The Supreme Court Must Be Stopped. “I think of the Supreme Court the way Batman thinks of Superman: an extremely powerful being who is untethered from the laws of physics and therefore must always be considered a threat to free society.” thenation.com/article/archive/…

I'm starting to think that the least credible trait of Superman is not that he can see through things, or have microscopic vision, or be invulnerable, or flying even through the solar system.

No, the most incredible thing (in 2024) is believing that, thanks to him being brought up in America, he would have such a strong moral compass that would never allow him to become a tyrant.

Does anyone have any insight about what's going on with the plasma-desktop package on Arch, I know there's a todo list for KDE 6 but everything is checked off as complete but we're still waiting for it to leave testing archlinux.org/todo/plasma-6/
in reply to Brodie Robertson

Someone linked to a bug in the screenshot tool in plasma 6 in the arch linux matrix room (i think in offtopic one), which is pretty bad enough. In some cases, black boxes are shown instead of selecting the screenshot area. It was something like that, dont remember exactly. This might be a reason why things are held back.

Will try to see if I can find the bug report once again on kde's bugtracker

in reply to Brodie Robertson

they are probably waiting for the 6.0.1 release tomorrow.
There are a bunch of bugfixes in 6.0.1: pointieststick.com/2024/03/02/…

On Gnome it is also very easy to change the light theme to be more colorful using Gradience, for example:

it is crazy that in the light theme of LibreOffice Writer, I can barely see the difference between the paper and the background... now they have some contour around, but for a few versions there wasn't...

what is going on with all the white and grey???

YES. I have turned my #RaspberryPi into the most wonderful media/music server. It's basically my own little super charged and non-capitalistic Spotify.

Here's how it works.

Playing music: It runs #Jellyfin (in a docker container). This is so amazing – it even has a phone app (this is how I listen mostly).

Adding more music:
The Pi has an external drive connected to it (mount at boot) with all my music, shared as a samba server on our home network, this makes it easy to manage the files.

in reply to Mads Kjeldgaard

very nice!

Two years ago I did a kodi install with a touchscreen and attached it to a tower that houses my sub, and it's a home music centre that everyone in the house loves. Media players are a great pi project and really reliable — I haven't had a single issue.

Unknown parent

in reply to Jen Sorensen

I know it's a joke, but it does occur to me that there are cases where encouraging the employees to anthropomorphosize non-people like this is a good idea. Like, in a cryo facility, you want all the workers to operate on the belief that every single body is a person who may be revived some day, and that allowing them to thaw would be the end of their life, not when they were frozen: you don't want workers who think they are just working fancy storage for dead bodies, which was what a lot of the early scams did.

Good comic. Makes my brain do things.

yes, all forms of bullying are erosive (and corrosive - the effects linger and continue well after the event). "Get back in the house, old man!" can be humorous or derisive depending on situation and participants. Even "hey, gubba" - sarcasm, humour, endearment, derision or statement of fact? there's a wonderful line of sarcastic comment in Melissa Lucashenko's lastest (loosely quoted)
"See you soon, Aunty, he said and closed the door
Aunty? When did i give him permission to call me Aunty? One cultural-awareness workshop and suddenly I've got 12 million nephews"
in reply to Muse

possibly a good example of overlaying the dominant (white) culture's beliefs/behaviours -albeit, well-meaning and goodly-hearted ("the goodly-hearted made lampshades and soap" Lou Reed) - onto another.

Mouse is celebrating #Caturday by looking moderately confused.

An Insane Use Case For Pipewire #Linux #YouTube youtu.be/qMJWfSYr0pY
in reply to Brodie Robertson

PipeWire routing is godlike. For years I used to have a super convoluted #JACK + #VoiceMeeter Potato setup to handle all my stupid routing on Windows (for music production).

It was very much a botched together solution from pieces that weren't really designed to do what I was trying to do and just barely sorta worked.

Then #PipeWire and #yabridge happened and ever since I tried it, I haven't looked back (not just at Windows, but also at PulseAudio).
