I know $12 USD is a lot of money for some people, so to celebrate 1000+ sales (!!!), I'm giving away 1000 PDF copies of How Git Works (honour system: only if $12 is a lot of money for you!)

Here's the link, enter code BUYONEGIVEONE at checkout to get a free copy wizardzines.com/zines/git/

I was going to post “the 1000 free copies of How Git Works for folks who can't afford it have all been claimed, I'll release more when we sell 2000 copies"

But then I went to check this morning and we've already sold 2000 copies of the zine??? So I guess we're giving away another 1000 copies now. wizardzines.com/zines/git/

I hate Zotac, their RMA in Brazil is garbage and has multiple times violated local consumer law. In addition, their staff is the rudest I have ever seen. I won't pick up a zotac product if I find it for free

All of these gaming handheld manufacturers choosing to use Windows makes me think they are not simply ignoring that Linux exists.

I really think it might be (at least in part) because they lack the technical expertise to support a Linux-powered handheld like the Steam Deck.

Valve, on the other hand, had nearly a decade's worth of experience working on Linux before they successfully released the Steam Deck — unlike their previous attempt with the Steam Machines.

There's no good way to prevent AI models from being trained on art published on the fediverse. But there's work we can do to prevent it and protect the artists who post there. #fediverse werd.io/2024/protecting-artist…
in reply to Ben Werdmuller

I don't think this is something where looking for a technical solution makes sense. It should be illegal for AI crawlers to collect unlicensed training material, rather than requiring every website to keep up with an every growing list of AI crawlers that are free to ignore robots.txt.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron It should be, and maybe it even is, but until someone actually stops them from doing it, the problem persists. Some lightweight protections feel important in that context.

I’ve got a new camera! Pentax KX. Unlike the Canon Ae-1 Program, it’s fully mechanical. Everything seems to be in working order, except the focusing ring being misaligned and rotating past infinity.

apologies for saying this, but does that mean " To infinity, and beyond".

On another note, my second slr was a Pentax ME Super. Lovely camera.

It’s weird when two things pop up around the same time, looking the same. Even more weird when one is a crypto start-up with a billion dollar valuation. And the other an under-funded non-profit in the Fediverse.

That’s the story of an unlikely couple: #Farcaster and #Newsmast.

Both built around channels, or communities. The success of Farcaster shows the potential in the #Fediverse.

blog-pat.ch/an-unlikely-couple…

#SocialMedia

in reply to Michael Foster

the similarities are there (though I think the basic idea is very similar to, say, FB groups and subreddits). But more important, it seems to me, are the differences. In Farcaster, everything from storage to content to channel creation are financialized.

As with crypto vs. open source in general, it's a question of whether making the economic layer explicit will attract or repel people.

Don't forget that the MV3 deprecation hasn't gone anywhere,

June 2024 is when Google will begin to disable MV2 extensions, this is supposed to start happening during Chrome 127 which is currently making its way through the dev channel developer.chrome.com/blog/resu…

in reply to Brodie Robertson

No better time to be supportive to the users of unfortunate #Chromium browsers by directing to something not as contrived. For example, instead of drowning #ManifestV3 altogether we could look at the implementations like Firefox that retain compatibility with #ManifestV2 and don't ruin the effective use of ad blocking features. Way to keep extension development modern, all the while disregarding #Google's terrible mistake.
in reply to Brodie Robertson

this makes me wonder if computers running windows 7 and outdated chrome will be able to keep using mv2 since they can't update anyways

Steven Moffat has always been "astonished" by how popular his Doctor Who episode 'Blink' became.

Initially, it was supposed to be a "big budget blockbuster episode, with CGI heavy aliens".

However, he was told at the last minute that his budget had been drastically cut, the two lead actors were unavailable, and his episode could only use minimal locations.

As a result, "I had to rewrite my entire script in the back of a taxi in 45 minutes, just making something up."
Moffat says that he "felt no pressure, because the Doctor isn't in it, so nobody will like it."

To his amazement, it has been "talked about for years, and people constantly compare to it, which is astonishing."

Moffat has since adopted the "less is more approach. Sometimes, the power of the imagination is your greatest ally. Keeping people guessing."

From Steven Moffat's Facebook page
I learned this same lesson during my theatre days.

Lovely tune--and done without any CGI!

‘So the Aesir commissioned a giant to build a wall. If he delivered the pizza in over 30 minutes it would be free, but if he did it on time he would get the sun, the moon, and Freya. He was initially on schedule due to the aid of his horse. Loki turned into a female horse to distract it. The pizza was free, and Loki gave birth to an 8-legged horse’
