The end of the great northern forests? The tiny tree-killing beetle wreaking havoc on our ancient giants

“This is a global phenomenon but it is also a complicated story,” says Prof Diana Six, a forest entomologist at the University of Montana.

Those are nice clouds! Did you use a polarizer to get that tone of sky?
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron Thank you! No polarizers here. I learned that clouds look best when there is a darker area in the frame (like the roof). Maybe it's how I expose or how I mastered my scanner (or both), but it's extremely hard to get a proper picture if it's only clouds in the frame (in most cases).

I was sad to find a surprising lack of visual scripting apps for Linux. Apple's Shortcuts app is very powerful and can be incredibly useful. It's not like we don't have the technical ability to make something similar.

So I started working on one myself :blobfoxfloofcofe:

Kind of as a birthday present (or an excuse to go out) @Andrew Pam and I went to the Art of the Brick Lego Exhibition. It was a fascinating experience. The amount of work that went into each piece was clearly considerable. If you have a chance to go, I would say that it is worth it. Just don't read the artist statements! They had me facepalming and whincing on a regular basis.

The animal room, which includes the two gorgeous polar bears, was my favourite.
The zebra people were probably the most aesthetic work.
The rainbow people have been a favourite with visitors!
The triumphal man and a few others in the room it shared all reminded me of Eastern European art under Soviet rule. I felt they could easily have had titles like: "Man Lifted by the State!"

And yet more from the Big Basin Redwoods State Park.

It looks like you got a shot of milkweed at the base of the tree. It’s a very important part of the ecosystem that supports the Monarch butterfly. A lot of folks in California are growing it in gardens as a conservation effort. We currently have 3 pupae in our front yard (we’ll have several dozens by the end of summer).

There's yet another open letter from the AI safety crowd. If they want more people to take them seriously, they need to get more specific

platformer.news/tuesday-newsle…

in reply to Casey Newton

I think the people behind the letter unequivocally subscribe to the idea that the current LLM technology is a path to AGI. It's important to question that assumption. That's the biggest disconnect for me when reading it. Such an assumption directly serves the interests of OpenAI and other LLM companies.

I was going to post “the 1000 free copies of How Git Works for folks who can't afford it have all been claimed, I'll release more when we sell 2000 copies"

But then I went to check this morning and we've already sold 2000 copies of the zine??? So I guess we're giving away another 1000 copies now. wizardzines.com/zines/git/

I hate Zotac, their RMA in Brazil is garbage and has multiple times violated local consumer law. In addition, their staff is the rudest I have ever seen. I won't pick up a zotac product if I find it for free
in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮

All of these gaming handheld manufacturers choosing to use Windows makes me think they are not simply ignoring that Linux exists.

I really think it might be (at least in part) because they lack the technical expertise to support a Linux-powered handheld like the Steam Deck.

Valve, on the other hand, had nearly a decade's worth of experience working on Linux before they successfully released the Steam Deck — unlike their previous attempt with the Steam Machines.

There's no good way to prevent AI models from being trained on art published on the fediverse. But there's work we can do to prevent it and protect the artists who post there. #fediverse werd.io/2024/protecting-artist…
in reply to Ben Werdmuller

I don't think this is something where looking for a technical solution makes sense. It should be illegal for AI crawlers to collect unlicensed training material, rather than requiring every website to keep up with an every growing list of AI crawlers that are free to ignore robots.txt.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron It should be, and maybe it even is, but until someone actually stops them from doing it, the problem persists. Some lightweight protections feel important in that context.

I’ve got a new camera! Pentax KX. Unlike the Canon Ae-1 Program, it’s fully mechanical. Everything seems to be in working order, except the focusing ring being misaligned and rotating past infinity.

apologies for saying this, but does that mean " To infinity, and beyond".

On another note, my second slr was a Pentax ME Super. Lovely camera.
