Remembering George Palade, born #OTD in 1912. His use of cell fractionation and electron microscopy led to many discoveries and laid a foundation for modern cell biology. I was fortunate to know him late in his career and early in mine. He exemplified everything academic leadership should be. #cellBiology #ElectronMicroscopy

My Twitter is gone, so I might start posting here more often! Let me re-introduce myself. I study birds. In particular, I borrow insights from developmental systems theory and enactive cognition to explore how birds experience and construct their social environments. I'm also critical of genetic determinism in animal and human behavior.

Sony reportedly looking to acquire Kadokawa, owner of ELDEN RING dev FromSoftware gamingonlinux.com/2024/11/sony…

Kadokawa is *gigantic*, that headline greatly underestimates the value of the purchase (even if the article goes a bit into it) and the potential it has for a cultural monopoly

@xerz only so much you can pop in a headline, and ELDEN RING being the big thing atm including the DLC up for GOTY nomination, it was the right thing to put in 😀

This one’s quite important, thespinoff.co.nz/atea/25-10-20….

While Māordom has been in an uproar about the Treaty Principles Bill, which New Zealand First MP Shane Jones says is “dead in the water”, the coalition government has quietly set the wheels in motion for at least 28 pieces of legislation to have their Treaty clauses reviewed and potentially removed.

Key terminology here is “investors.” This seems like just the right sort of trickery perfected by conservatives in America.

can a UI designer (preferably one who works at microsoft) tell me why there's a link in windows settings labelled "changing taskbar colour", which opens a bing search in edge for "change windows 11 taskbar colour site:microsoft.com", with colours spelt the UK way, which shows zero results but has a suggestion box containing a button labelled "open colors setting", with colours spelt the US way, which opens a new tab which asks if you'd like edge to open settings, which opens the windows settings app to the colour personalisation page, only to have the "set taskbar colour" switch be greyed out
in reply to Lynnesbian

UI designer here, it's a mix of corporate greed (the Bing/Edge nonsense) and just bad UX design (you apparently have to switch the theme to "Dark" or "Custom" - if you select Custom you then have to switch "Windows mode" to dark first 💀 - for that toggle to get enabled from what I've seen, never used Windows 11 though)

A collaborator found out that the US State Dept is seeking public input on whether "satellite signature reduction" should be subject to ITAR regs.

Translation: should satellite operators who make their satellites fainter (in order to not destroy the night sky quite as much) be allowed to talk about how they did it?

So some of my collaborators and I put together a quick and easy template for you to email the US State Dept and tell them this shouldn't be secret info:

I think liberals consistently fail to understand how much US culture is saturated in a cowboy/gangster/disruption ethic that privileges risk over safety and greatness over equity.

There are virtues to this ethic. But it also comes with a legacy of brutality that is only too visible right now.

in reply to Nathan Schneider

Thanks for writing this. I think chunks of it could apply to the "longing for days of Empire" mentality in the UK too, as espoused by the likes of Boris Johnson. I've often found it interesting that the heroes of that tribe tend to be explorers (Shackleton, Livinstone, Scott, etc) creating an analogous mythology to the wild west. Plenty to ponder.

At the time, I thought I missed focus because focusing with a Rolleinar is hard (it is). But now having discovered the focus was out of whack, I wonder if it wasn't just the camera 🤔

oh yeah... remember who he wants to be controlling things in regards to the CDC, etc. It will get MUCH worse... as in the CDC will be near useless under Trump this time. He plans on purging it, just like he wants to purge the joint chiefs of staff of the military, the FBI, the Education system etc. And the current speaker will do whatever he wants, if they can ram rod it thru.
