I "play" a game called Kind Words. It's where people say supportive things to one another. You can also make requests for advice. This morning I have young people posting about how scared they are after this event.

Anybody else see the problem of an entire generation so accustomed to shooter drills that they worry about the country but not themselves? I don't know how else to put it.
Even as I struggle to care for my husband sometimes, I'm so glad I don't have kids. I'd feel like a heel for dropping them into this mess.
Young people know to be scared. A number of their parents do not. They know to be scared about the environment. They know to be scared by civil war. They even know to be scared that people aren't vaccinating.
Too many parents figure that if it's not happening to them directly and now, troubling events are of no consequence. "I have enough problems of my own," and "That's somebody else's problem", and "You're just saying that to scare me, none of it is true." Mostly, they don't want to feel powerless. But denial just puts you in a bubble, it doesn't get you power.

parents also dont want their children to live in fear or in a fearful environment and may well be most concerned about such issues but they dont share their worries with the young'uns, while working toward solutions. Naturally, their children may interpret this as "they dont care!" or dont care enough. Of course there are folk who want to remain oblivious - maybe such issues are too great and they feel powerless, so best to deal with what's within their reach. The job of parents is to protect their young - most do this with whatever tools they have.
let's not forget that we aren't born with knowledge of great parenting. Parents are just normal people, making it up as they go along and hoping that they are doing something right. ;)
@Girl Of The Sea those of us (and there are many here on d*) who grew up in or even near war zones can probably get pretty close to feeling it. The US is not exclusive in that regard.. _however_, it should not be in that position, either - that is an incredible sadness and just so astoundingly wrong.
I very carefully say, "a number of parents". The desperation is great in the US. Anger and frustration run high. So many people are so damaged that they are lost in emotions they desperately want to express. I am regularly chatting with young people in the US who are being abused by their parents. Certainly, in other countries young people are also being abused. I don't know as much about them.
Having done my own time inside an abusive family, I give young peopole what tips I can in how to survive their home life, avoid as much emotional damage as possible, find help, leave as soon as possible, and later what they will need to do to recover. Without help, they can get stuck in perpetuating their parents's errors. Abuse often continues over generations.
There is nothing worse than waking up one day and realising absolutely no one in your life is going to do anything to help you, and you are quite clearly not safe.
@Muse oh yeah, some parents are just outright cunts. Some are so enmeshed in their own struggles that they dont see a future - children are the future, safe to say they are also not seen. source: me, dealt/dealing with easily hundreds of kids and parents who were/are in the most appalling of circumstances.
*dont see a future - as in it simply doesnt exist, not "they've pondered upon it and found it lacking", it's just not something that's considered or applicable to their lives.
Please be careful about "cut the parents some slack". You are absolutely right that it is hard to be a parent, and schools usually don't have helpful curriculums in this regard. However, when this is said to people suffering from the actions of a dysfunctional family, it often results in shutting them down when they are asking for help. It can look like you are unwilling to consider that they may be suffering at the hands of their family elders.
rest easy, i'm more than aware of how my words may be interpreted but no-one here was asking for help. If they were, i would take a different and more effective tack.
