This is *not* a space skull.💀 This is an X-ray binary system made of two parts: a compact stellar remnant -- either neutron star or black hole; and a companion star, with surrounding gas heated to millions of degrees. A long time ago I went to the Canyon de Chelly in Arizona in Winter. On the way there from Highway 40 it snowed really hard and all of a sudden there were 2 white, wild horses on the street. They blended in so much that I almost could not see them. We were the only one around for miles, really cool experience.

Your 'art class' post reminded me of that. Thanks for that!

disability, ableism, mastodon 'activism'

[Thread]Thinking about this in a #crip and #disability context:

"And I’ve realized that Mastodon is a superb example of antiviral design.

It was engineered specifically to create friction — to slow things down a bit. This is a big part of why it behaves so differently from mainstream social networks." uxdesign.cc/mastodon-is-antivi…

Past few years I've been thinking on the way the social media landscape reflects the societal urge towards the frictionaless 1/?

in reply to VI

disability, ableism, mastodon 'activism' capitalism

Even the defining principles of activism is to 'do'. and to reduce the friction and limitation/increase visibility and induce change about a given issue.

Yet a lot of direct action *involves* adding friction to the system you want to change, until it breaks - lock on, sit ins, other kinds of direct action its not wise to talk about online. Traditional social media's 'strength' has been virality's ability to connect [3/?]

But what I'm wondering is, what if the friction experienced by #disabled and #crip lives gives us a fundamental insight into how to exist and prosper under conditions of maximum human friction - where we know that it's the *quality* not *quantity* of how we exist and what we do that's the important bit - under conditions of slowness we manage to maximise despite the impssibility of speed which we are taught to desire. @domi_weeb You can use a userstyle but the canon answer is that you can't, the UI is meant to house a lot of columns. Try pinafore.social for a single-column UI.

in reply to Eugen Rochko

Actually thanks for the suggestion! Now that Mastodon is probably becoming the new Twitter, I'm gonna be using that ^^

I'm closing registration temporarily on bookwyrm.social because it's overloaded and my work schedule won't permit me to be available for BookWyrm stuff.

But don't be sad, there are a bunch of lovely instances that are not absolutely slammed at the moment! Consider trying one of them: joinbookwyrm.com/instances/

And consider supporting BookWyrm on Patreon: patreon.com/bookwyrm

So I was checking my logs and people report me to me all the time, but I got a report from mas.to, who has defederated with me, which is fine, but what was said got my attention.

They called me racist and said I didn't use content warnings for my content, which we've discussed at length this week, and how entitled it is. We all know that's just white people shit.

But they say I attack people. This is a bald-faced lie. If you look at every single one of my contentious moments with other users on here, they come at me. I don't attack people. I defend myself. 100% of the time. I do not go after people. That's not my thing, and I have zero interest in the lives of bigots and people who just don't like me for whatever reason.

Earlier in the week, I talked about how much understanding there is for bigotry and hate on the fedi but that isn't extended to it's targets.

The situation is with mas.to is a perfect example of this.

I would urge caution for anyone who interacts with that instance as they've shown a tolerance for bigotry but none for people who are harassed and targeted by it.

My #micromusic gigging #Amiga. It has both a USB floppy drive emulator and a small built-in display, making it an absolute pleasure to bring out to live shows to play my #ProTracker2 #music!

I'm getting serious nostalgia vibes here. God knows how many hours of Sensible Soccer and Cannon Fodder I played on my Amiga 500 back in the day. Great to see them being put to some serious use nowadays though.
