Roughly 3.5 months after I started it, my #celestarium is finished. Itโ€™s huge, itโ€™s magic and it didnโ€™t take nearly as long as I expected. I didnโ€™t work on it for most of the time. But a lot of Star Trek Voyager, DS9, Next Generation, a couple of Lower Decks episodes and a little bit of the Expanse went in there.

The Callisto Protocol recently had a Steam Deck upgrade, so I took another look.

It can now almost hit a smooth 30FPS, but not quite. They're also now weirdly hiding the benchmark mode on Steam Deck.

Rather than teach #science by compartmentalizing biology, chemistry, physics, etc., we should focus on systems thinking.

The world is interconnected - oceans, food, #climate, energy, health, security, biodiversity & on.

When more of us, all around the world, consider how the pieces fit together & influence each other, weโ€™ll be better equipped to meet global challenges.

Book recommendation: donellameadows.org/systems-thiโ€ฆ by the inspiring scholar Donella Meadows

in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

Some of us divergent types can't help but think systemically. I have presented to several groups of engineers about building innovative teams. I recommend doing deep research in a very different field, like biology (as opposed to computer science for example), when searching for inspiration. I have several good examples and love the idea of transdisciplinary thought. You have my vote.

Let's talk about engagement on the #fediverse:

The @EU_Commission
has 71k followers on #mastodon. They have 1.7 million followers on Twitter.

The same post got:
363 boosts on Mastodon
110 retweets on Twitter

So the same message got 3 times as many engagements on the #openweb

We really need to celebrate that a group of grassroots #4opens activists got the #EU to use #fediverse #openweb apps. This shows where the value comes from, good to link to this thanks

^^^ said that an EU posting got 3 times as many boosts on mastodon as retweets on Twitter.

Interesting.

What is even more interesting is that they got 70 times as many boosts per mastodon follower, as retweets per twitter follower!

Introducing Tidier.jl for #JuliaLang:

A 100% Julia implementation of the #rstats {tidyverse}. Powered by the DataFrames.jl package and Juliaโ€™s meta-programming capabilities.

github.com/kdpsingh/Tidier.jl

Still a work in progress.

Tidier.jl currently supports many of the core tidyverse functions. Because the package implements a non-standard domain-specific language (i.e., tidyverse) within Julia, it requires macros instead of plain functions, which is why all of the functions start with a "@".

Welp, I'm addicted to #TrackMania all over again on #SteamDeck.

Want to extend your battery life? Here's my suggestion:

TrackMania can run on the "Very Nice" graphics preset and MAYBE maintain 60fps, but you're maxing out power at ~24W, resulting in 90m of battery life. Dropping the preset to "Fast" cuts power all the way down to ~13.5W, and still looks pretty good!

You COULD keep "Very Nice" preset and trim power to 12W by limiting refresh rate to 40Hz, but you NEED 60fps with TrackMania!

The APOBEC3B cytidine deaminase is an adenovirus restriction factor

"we show that adenovirus infection leads to a reduction of the quantity and/or enzymatic activity of the APOBEC3B protein depending on the strains. The A12 strain seems less able to resist APOBEC3B than the B3 or C2 strains, a characteristic which could explain the strong depletion of the APOBEC3-targeted motifs in the A12 genome."
