Welp, so. I guess I'm here now and it's #introduction / #introductions time? I'm a #science writer, #journalist, #podcast host & video maker with a special fondness for weird/gross biology. I'm also a #DnD GM and a huge nerd for #books (especially #scifi) and #comics.

This week, I wrote about a type of lemur that picks its nose with an incredibly spindly finger that's so long it can reach up through its nasal cavity and touch its pharynx.

Nice to meet you, too!

“People spend one-third of their lives asleep. What if employees could work during that time … in their dreams?”

The first sentence of this article is like a Black Mirror episode pitch that got immediately shitcanned because nobody wants to watch heavy-handed Marxist social critique based on an utterly implausible premise.

I just realized that not only I celebrate a whole year of Doodle O'Clock in November, but also it's been a year since I have been here on Mastodon!

Thank you so much for having me around here and being the absolute most lovely corner there is online ❤️

Here's a little video about the new color film stock from Harman/Ilford, Phoenix 200. Previously Kodak had the only factory producing color film, so this is very exciting.

how expensive is it typically? I remember 10 years ago trying and it was like $20 / roll just for the film.
in reply to Caroline

@caroline That sounds about right on average. It's about the same for the development and scanning service.

Well, Jacquie is Canadian. Zoos and gardens sometimes have Spanish moss. Needs further investigation!

My research focuses on how senior congressional staffers in the U.S. make decisions on #science policy.

For over a year, I’ve been sifting through hours & hours & hours of transcripts from my interviews while analyzing the data & writing.

Now, it's time to begin sharing what I've learned... sheril.substack.com/p/lets-beg… #politics

Does this account for the shifting baseline in people’s views where they and so many go hard to the right that centrist positions are viewed as hard left?

Speaking as a Brit 🇬🇧, universal healthcare is not some socialist hard left thing.

The centre, who cares about the economy realises that the economy benefits from better health in the workforce, enjoys the cost saving of not having to fund health insurance and improves on the increased liquidity of Human Resources where people can swap jobs as they are not locked in on insurance.

Healthcare is human equivalent to roads, where everyone benefits and the cheapest way is through government monopoly. Yes, cheapest as a cost to business.

Healthcare is NOT left wing! It is only questioned by those obsessed with not helping people or businesses and I can only think of one thing that’s about. #Racism

in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

I almost didn't click because the opening quote from the senior congressional staffer seemed so absurd. The left has, maybe more influence on the democratic party than it did 25 years ago, but it sure doesn't "run the party" .

I love the game and what that team pulled off. Getting announced as part of the lockdown EVO online was great at getting eyes into it.

On the flip side this is a reminder to never buy a game on future promises (same with most tech). Buy it in its actually released state if that makes you happy, and should they meet those future goals then even better!

in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮

that's sad to hear, because #ThemFightingHerds really was promising...

But I guess too many people pirate and mod #FightingIsMagic to the point that I know a literal #Arcade cabinet with it on!

@adamgreenfield I hear you—though given the nature of the existing systems, I can understand the urge to work with them wherever it seems possible. This underscores the need for building membership based organizations that demand this change rather than more think tanks.

@adamgreenfield yep. Now am working on a paper about attention economies in governance hoping to help folks think about that challenge more clearly.
