Being in the industry, I can tell you with 100% confidence that a lot of the "great practical FX" that you've seen in the past 20 years... is actually CG (3D models, anim, sim, rendering, comp, etc). The whole point is that good CG has gotten so good that you'd have no idea f you didn't already know.
But it's cooler for studios and directors to just lie about that and market things as "100% practical", and the lie is easy to get away with because it's indistinguishable.

There were and are some annoyances to be sure, but I've stayed all these years for the cost, speed, customization, freedom, and privacy.

Corporate OS's don't give you ownership, they let you purchase a license to use, and according to their terms. Linux is among a handful of OS's that allow me to OWN my computers, and the only one with a wide array of both hardware and software support... and it's free, in both senses. No brainer there.
