and surprisingly Ubuntu 26.04 LTS is shipping with 7.0. So realistically 25.10 users can upgrade in like 2 weeks

i love that they are opening self hosting. But:

"Please be advised that the initial setup for this first iteration of the feature is more technical than most other games and requires a computer running Microsoft Windows Pro with Hyper-V in order to run the servers in a Linux Virtual Machine (VM). "

As someone who does not run anything but Linux, this, admittedly seems a bit dumb.

"You must have a windows pro license to run this on Linux"

Latin nerds, I need you!
Offering Elvish nerdery in return 👇

Trying to translate "keep it secret – keep it safe" to #Latin, which I know is tricksy. Looking at verbs like servare and conservare, and adjectives for "safe" like tutus/salvus/securus...??

If you can help, I will write your phrase of choice in Tengwar (Elvish script)! Here's a sample of one way I write it – though I'll do straight lines 😅
I'll write them on a livestream and link image files for you.

Brought my son to see Rent & the story is still as incredible & timely as ever.

It’s interesting to consider the parallel between the changing media environment of the 90s spurred by the Internet with today’s AI transition.

As a native New Yorker & teen when it first debuted, I’ve always felt a special connection with this one.

Glad my 13yo could experience it too. Sparked good conversations. Angel was ahead of her time. #art

I still sing it with my early-20's kids. "How do you measure, measure a year..."

#Apple erased in their #maps all the cities, villages, and names in southern #Lebanon

What do you call it when you digitally erase a population group from an area to make that area empty or homogeneous, or the deliberate attempt to make a national, ethnic, or religious group wholly or partially disappear from the map?”

[update]No response from Apple yet, it’s unclear if, since, why, when this has been the case. Missing data? error?

RE: mastodon.gamedev.place/@eniko/…

Having lived through both (and the book bans, Chinese products, vaccines, food additives, video games, rap, non-English speakers, fucking other people's family BBQs, ect ect) it's all the same thing. It's always the same thing, (rich/white) people blaming something else instead of their shitty abusive parenting and the harmful status quo they depend on to explain why their abused and hurting kids are abused and hurting.

i really hope 40 years from now people will look at banning kids from social media the way people now look at the satanic panic of the 80s

#Iwatched The Mummy (1999) for the first time. As expected it was a fun classic adventure time. The film obviously owes a lot to the Indiana Jones series but more interestingly it is elevated by the performance of the charming and witty #RachelWeisz. I'll have to check out other projects of hers.

This July I will be building a temporary art pavilion in Wicklow, Ireland. It will celebrate the folk traditions and technologies of the plant known in the Irish language as aiteann (aka gorse/furze/whin).

I will be building the pavilion from the wood and thorny leaves of the plant. Aiteann was once used in thatch along with other materials like straw and willow. I have been learning the process from a thatcher named Anthony.

that would be super useful, there's so many devices for which Left is just way too large, that would benefit from having a small responsive editor!

Trying to figure out how to love computing (and tech) again, at least in the way I used to be passionate about it. I'm finding #permacomputing was the thing that used to always hit so close to my heart, part of it just felt right somehow. But I never was able to find the kind of community I'm looking for, I've been to build clubs and hackerspaces and such, but they never felt like permacomputing spaces, instead they focused on the easiest way to get any project done, rather than trying to be the most effective in materials and power usage. Wondering if anymany else has had this experience, and if they found knowledgable communities they could learn from.

I know that there is a group on the fediverse connected to permacomputing, but it's more a format to occasionally see interesting things, rather than be able to effectively ask for tips with projects.

in reply to Hazel the Puppycat

Like, currently I don't even know where to start. I have a project idea of a DIY weather station which would be repairable and designed to last, but even on the basics of compute, and especially communications I am stuck. My mind just goes to using an ESP32 at first, but I know they have closed source firmware, and I don't own one, and they are relatively expensive because they make the development experience smooth. I do have an old graphing calulator I imagine I could have fun rooting or sideloading code to, but it has no networking, maybe I could integrate LoRa stuff with it somehow... but given I don't have anything LoRa on hand or any idea how to integrate it with said calculator yet, maybe an ESP32 would be better, as I'd have to buy LoRa components anyhow. Let alone I am sure the ESP32 would be more efficent than powering the calculator ^^". It's just so many options, and idk what the pitfalls and things to be careful of are.
in reply to Hazel the Puppycat

I was wondering if your weather station had to be digital at all? Would it be enough to make a barometer push a little needle with a lead point on a piece of a paper?

Simpler parts, easy to repare, lasts forever, uses power only to turn the drum, but you could do without.

Alternatively, you can strip the bark of a slender fir branch, and stick it on the wall and it will point up or down based on the coming weather 😀
