UK told its Big Tech habit is now a national security risk
The warning comes from Open Rights Group, whose latest report, "Tech Giants and Giant Slayers," argues that the UK has let a small group of American megacorps entrench themselves across critical infrastructure, shaping not just systems but policy itself. The result is a mix of economic drag, security exposure, and a growing inability to act independently when it matters. The risk shows up when politics is involved. The report points to US sanctions against the International Criminal Court (ICC) for issuing arrest warrants for Benjamin Netanyahu, and claims Microsoft shut down email and banking-related services for affected individuals. The report says this shows how "tech powers of sanction" can cut off access entirely, and what that might look like if UK-US relations soured.
The Competition and Markets Authority says at least £500 million a year is being overspent on cloud services, and that's before you add in projects that overrun, suppliers that never quite leave, and systems everyone avoids touching.

Amazing. Congratulations!!
I sometimes manage to run at a 4'41" pace for one km. Doing it for 42.2 is wild. Well done.
Now, remember to get some rest and celebrate.

just googled "end of life" because i couldn't remember the URL for endoflife.date/ and the results were pretty depressing
usually google's all-knowing algorithm knows what i mean, like i'll look up "rust performance" and most of the top results are about the language rather than getting 120FPS in Tom Clancy's Rock Smasher

This is interesting. In my blogposts analyzing ATproto I had compared the shared heap vs message passing from a CS perspective

Ian Preston of Peergos did the actual formal mathematical proof of the incentive structure: peergos.net/secret/z59vuwzfFDp…
> It is interesting that this is independent of N. Let's say you have 1000 servers, and 1000 followers per user. Then the shared heap model uses about the same network bandwidth. With a small number of servers SH can be better, with many servers AP is better.
> The conclusion is that the shared-heap model builds in a structural incentive to keep M small, and thus has a natural centralizing force. Conversely there is an incentive in AP to keep F small.
Ie, there is a mathematical incentive in ATproto to only have a few large players.
