Update on the data situation:

I've bought myself a new drive for my home partition and am currently in the process of migrating data over before I lose anymore

in reply to Brodie Robertson

The silver lining is I'm proven very right about splitting out your home and root partitions, this could have been so much worse if they were on the same drive

@nano They do but generally not as a default, you have to go in and build your own table

#introduction finally! Hi everybody and thanks for setting up scholar.social. welcome 👋 it's great to have new folks in the local timeline and introducing themselves to the wider fediverse (or at least masto-verse?) with an introduction

I'm having a lot of technical issues on this instance. I imagine this is a sign of overloading from new folks from Twitter. But... I'm going to be posting from my other identity for now... writing.exchange/@gg

Why, just why. Why Bluesky exists? if Jack Dorsey wants to own social media platform, he already had twitter. Why did he let it go for crypto then come back to create new platform called bsky.app

Why

This remote follow tool looks useful for embedding buttons on websites so people can follow you on the Fediverse github.com/mwt/apfollow
in reply to Doug Belshaw

love the idea but of a follow me button but would not have the faintest idea how to incorporate it in my sites on Squarespace, Substack or Medium… any suggestion for dunderheads like me? 🥸

you're friggin awesome.

Can I ask a favour?

I'm really grateful to be recommended as a follow, but can you also mention the website (fedi.tips) when you do so?

At the moment getting a lot of questions which are answered on the site, and it's difficult to keep up with every question. I'm happy to keep answering, but also afraid I'll miss someone's question.

If they know about the site from the beginning, they will have a chance of finding the answers themselves if I do miss their question.

Thanks 🙏

It originally being called "flesh" makes sense. It's "vlees" in Dutch and "Fleisch" in German. I've always wondered where the word "meat" comes from.

in reply to Brodie Robertson

I don't know about the border radius but I like the way that they seperated live streams, shorts and videos.

I would normally unlist my live streams because it would mess up with videos section. Now I am not unlisting anymore.

@Bob Lai Exactly. Classic Roddenberry slam of racism. And yes, racism really does look that stupid to the rest of us.

Image uploads slow again and I see we have 20k background jobs queued (everything like posting, liking a post, boosting, etc. is a job that the server has to execute and it takes resources to be able to do this; more users = more jobs = more resources).

Every time I upgrade the server a 'slot' to get extra resources, it costs 40 EUR. Right now we're on 280 a month.

Any donation help, once off or recurring, is *very* much appreciated:

Amazingly, I am a part of an article submission today and a resubmission this week.

Neither article is my area of expertise, per se, but I made substantial contributions to both and learned a lot.

It's a great reminder that #science is a team sport. It's better and more productive to work together!

My Web-surfing entry for the day:

elainemcmillionsheldon.com/

Elaine McMillion Sheldon is an amazing documentary journalist whose work "Hollow" was what first captured my attention. Gobsmackingly good. Unfortunately the website for that project is no longer operative, but you can at least view the videos from that project here: vimeo.com/channels/hollow (and I suggest you give yourself time to check out some of the other pieces on Vimeo or check out her links from her main site.)

Happy viewing.

in reply to Geoffrey Gevalt

I thought her name was familiar when you shared that link. I remember Hollow and had it as one example (of likely mostly dead links) when I was interested in interactive web documentaries lab.cogdogblog.com/i-docs/

Geoffrey Gevalt reshared this.

in reply to Alan Levine

@cogdog yes. That’s right. You can piece together the project in her Hollow Collection on Vimeo. It is outstanding work. She was nominated for an Academy Award on one of her other docs.
in reply to Alan Levine

@cogdog by the way that page of docs is amazing. I am going to spend a lot of time following those links. thanks.

(Outside readers, here's a great compilation of excellent documentaries: lab.cogdogblog.com/i-docs/)

in reply to Geoffrey Gevalt

Alas, very likely then Hollow is now a Deeply Buried Hollow.

I've fiddled some with ruffle.rs/ but never with success.

in reply to Alan Levine

@cogdog it’s a shame really. So many cool sites were created in Flash; never could figure out why Adobe couldn’t have dug in and figured how to solve the security issues.
in reply to Geoffrey Gevalt

there’s some epic saga that laid it all out having to do with a battle with adobe over postscript in printers. I think. There was an open letter Jobs and apple published (deleted from apple.com) that more or less laid it out that they would never allow Flash on mobile devices. The war was over there

That big project I did last month is finally up online! ted.com/talks/laura_ritchie_mu… Music is as real as your heart. - me, my cello, and words I mean with all I am. You make a difference. - please do watch and share. It starts with a 2 min extract from Jill Jarman’s ‘Resonance’ before I speak, and these are the images I spent so long making… and this might be the most elaborate live ‘kareoke’ you see. #YesICan #music
in reply to Laura Ritchie 🌸

I so enjoyed watching this again. Thanks. Am always moved by your energy, optimism and postive, forward thinking.

As a long practitioner of the "Yes I Can" philosophy of life, I can tell you my current goal: To Write A Good Fucking Novel.

I am progressing, after 3 years on my 5th draft which is now at my editor's. Publishing plans all set, and site begun: geoffreygevalt.substack.com (feel free to visit if you want to read/hear a sample; FYI subscription is free.)

in reply to Geoffrey Gevalt

@GeoffreyGevalt yay!! There was a new one this year - I got to go to LA and do another (different one) in person ! It was SO FUN !!! Like the very best fun ever.

and yes, I want to go back. (and I am sure I will!)

#introduction I'm a former PhD student in evolutionary biology who has remained passionate about #scicomm and now enjoy reviewing academic books over at inquisitivebiologist.com
in reply to The Inquisitive Biologist

yeah when I imported my good reads into Bookwyrm I got a list of things that failed to import. That was a slight pain. The database seems to be able to import now from others so there is some improvement on that front. I'm not sure about the status of more academic titles in the database is though. Anyhoo, I'll keep an eye out for (links to?) your reviews here 😁
in reply to Danny (he/they)

@danwchan Thanks, please do! Just chugging my way through an almighty large book that is taking weeks, but hopefully a new review in a while. I'll keep an eye on BookWyrm and see how it develops.
