I'm sitting down here in Florida waiting for the dumpster fire that will be tomorrow's election.
I cast my absentee ballot in Wisconsin before I left - and will watch that dumpster fire from afar.

2022 will likely be the last time I cast a ballot in Wisconsin. Even though Florida is a political hell hole, Wisconsin is the most gerrymandered of all the gerrymandered states. I'll stop paying state income taxes to Wisconsin because they DO NOT deserve my money.

in reply to Barry Dahl

I'd appreciate if you made posts like this (especially with a attention grabbing picture like that) under a CW. Perhaps uspol?
in reply to Danny (he/they)

@danwchan This needs to be either posted as Unlisted or with a CW

Delete & re-draft to fix this

Thanks for understanding

It might be a small thing, but I'm very glad I did this little mod on my #MIDINES, because it makes this way easier to pack up and easier to use with my TRSMIDI gear.

in reply to jefftheworld

I think it's something to connect a NES to a MIDI stack and play the console like a musical instrument.

I finished my PhD in 2020 on building sustainable science, and the main point of my dissertation was that we need to reshuffle publishing from outcome based (e.g., papers) to process based.

To realise this, I founded Liberate Science, the organization behind the open access publishing platform ResearchEquals.com

Pedalboard boxes work great for people like me with lots of small, random bits of gear.

These ones are great because I can keep everything secured to the base with velcro!

Y'all, I want to boost something really important that I haven't seen #academic Mastodon, #histodons and etc broach yet.

Beginning November 14, UAW Academic Workers have announced a statewide strike against the University of California.

The #strike may become the largest academic worker strike in US history.

You can show support for grad students, postdocs, and researchers in several ways. To learn how, check out:

🤣 Holy shit, Secret Base writing is so good. Them gently remarking on Steve Jeltz getting clowned on his own baseball card made me pause to laugh for a long minute. youtu.be/VfFn4NqQr_U

Also: “Bob Walk? More like Bob Walk.”

And: "I wonder whether [Jim Rooker, who wagered a walk from the Philly stadium to Pittsburgh if Pittsburgh lost] remembered that Pittsburgh and Philidelphia are separated by the Allegheny Mountains."

Their work is so good.

Hi all,
Got the invite by @kathrynyu
Excited to be here. My name is Glen Henry (he/him).

I'm a software project manager by trade and face & fingers behind Spritewrench Studios. A solo-ish micro-studio based in Kingston, Jamaica.
I (usually) focus on smaller self-contained titles with an emphasis on narrative elements.

Current:
Working on two projects at the moment:
+ "On the Peril of Parrots", a narrative puzzle game where you play as an AI trying to prove it's intelligence.
store.steampowered.com/app/213…
+ "Duppy Detective Tashia", a detective game based on Caribbean Folklore.
store.steampowered.com/app/195…

About Me:
I'm a self taught artist and have spent most of my life trying to find a way to sustainably combine my passion for art with technology.
Naturally, games felt like the best fit. I've gone the indie route as there isn't an established industry in my country, and I try to help out the local game dev scene through efforts with the JGDS (Jamaica Game Developer Society).

"Featured hashtag editor replaces camel case by lower case"
github.com/mastodon/mastodon/i…

Currently, when adding a featured hashtag to your profile, if you use camelcase (e.g. MastodonCats) it gets lowercased (e.g. mastodoncats), which isn't great for #accessibility / #a11y.

If you're into it, click through to the Github issue to add your 👍 or comment of support. And if you don't have a Github account but still want to support, please boost. 🚀

Beat Saber

Had a delightful #BeatSaber session this evening, and landed on a wonderfully difficult and clever map: tofubeats' "CANDYYYLAND (Pa’s Lam System Remix)", mapped by Saut: bsaber.com/songs/294c/

Here's a very skilled person playing on Expert, the hardest difficulty I beat: youtu.be/3XjdriFOgLk (unrelated: they have wildly low-contrast block arrows! 🤯) The segment starting at 2:48 in that video is so smoothly mapped that I didn't even get tangled up in left-handed mode.

#VideoGames

in reply to Melissa Avery-Weir

Beat Saber

Ooh yes this is EXACTLY what I was after, thank you! ❤

The pattern I was trying to name/define isn't a stream exactly; it goes rightdown/leftdown/rightup/leftup (or from the left, leftdown/rightdown/leftup/rightup) kinda moving your whole torso-attention from one side of the stage to the other, rolling your arms in a kinda barrel roll. There's a map of "Elements" by Lindsey Stirling that does it a whole lot

in reply to Dan moved, see pinned toot

Beat Saber

@ifixcoinops Yes, those are maybe piano streams? Barrel roll is a better name, imo. It's a really fun pattern, and feels good when you can nail it. I had a very pretty, atmospheric map sit for *months* in my Ex --> E+ struggles because of a fast burst of those in the middle of the song that just knotted my brain up and sometimes clashed my controllers painfully. 😁

Oh! And thank you for reminding me Lindsey Stirling exists! Some good-looking maps of her stuff out there. 💃🏾

An article on #Time website. #mastodon is becoming more noticed and known 😀 time.com/6229230/mastodon-euge…
in reply to Jan Wildeboer 😷

Mastodon, individualism

Thanks for sharing.

While I am grateful to Eugene Rotchko, I am also grateful to all involved in creating, maintaining, hosting, developing, posting and otherwise contributing to Mastodon.

But I feel the cult-of-personality messaging doesn't fit here, even if his intent is well stated. If newspapers like Time feel they need a Joseph Campbell style "hero" they have missed the point.

(plus the interviewer mentions funds/pay/money more times than necessary)

References to ableism & ableist language, blog post

In searching for an instance to join, I noticed that many do not mention ableism in their ToC. I care about avoiding ableist language, so I picked one that did mention it.

I do notice quite a bit of ableist language in the larger fediverse, so decided to write a blog post of common objections to avoiding ableist language, and my responses to them.

Here it is: medium.com/@kavanaram/avoid-ab…

#Disability #Ableism #AbleistLanguage @disability

For everyone here: I read there is a shortage of instances run by women admins. I know a few already, but I love to know more. I am one for one, but
vis.social/about/more and I thought mastodon.art/about/more is one too.
Mine i socialserver.science/about/mor… and is mainly aimed at scientists and scientific visualizers.
Please boost!

I see quite a lot of #Science posts expressing concern if The Public will follow their authors' #TwitterMigration over on here.

Here's the thing: they don't even have to. Every #Mastodon account has an #RSS feed. For example, here's mine:
mstdn.social/@rysiek.rss

Every hashtag has an RSS feed as well (as seen from a given instance), for example:
mstdn.social/tags/Science.rss

Your audiences can follow you without ever setting up an account on fedi, with any RSS reader.

Obviously #Fediverse is more than just Mastodon. I am not sure if #Pleroma and #Misskey offer RSS feeds of accounts and hashtags — would love input here!

I know some other fedi instance software also does offer RSS feeds. For example, @Castopod does: podcast.tomasino.org/@Solarpun…

Anyone who knows about RSS support in other fedi instance software, please do jump in and share!

in reply to Michał "rysiek" Woźniak · 🇺🇦

@Castopod how are people "bookmarking" individual posts and threads? I started a folder in my browser bookmarks but I'm sure there are other methods
in reply to Tommy Boy

favourites are stored in a list. I think your search does look through them. There is at least a chronological scroll through them. I sense there should be some tool out there to manage favourites via the api.
in reply to Microbiology Journal Club

I found bookmarks on a browser. But tell me about Biotech Without Borders. I'm a nerd, and a Swiftie, but try to keep those low key.
in reply to Tommy Boy

biotechwithoutborders.org/ and somewhat buried on the site loomio.com/biotech-without-bor… what's a Swiftie?
in reply to Microbiology Journal Club

I am a Taylor Swift fan and I'm not afraid to say it. Just like Van Halen, I'm attached to her older stuff.

Also an engineer but I work with scientists in a medical research lab. They're all super smart so I'm always interested in keeping up on biochem science.

in reply to Tommy Boy

But... I realize we have a common mission - I also run a nonprofit that includes a virtual makerspace to lure military veterans closer to real science. It's been hard to compete with the "do your own research" crowd but I haven't given up yet.
in reply to Tommy Boy

if i post stuff about Biotech without Borders it'll likely be from this account. If you're ever in the NYC area I'd be happy to show you the space.

Up until yesterday/today it was feasible for me to respond to most un-described art from new users with a note about image descriptions. It's too busy for me to do that now, but if you want to ask people to consider it, please do it gently, and you can send people the following link that explains why it's important, and how to do it:

In case you missed me a couple years ago! I finally got the footage from this event. I'm clearly not exceptionally animated in this video but I was exhausted because I was doing two shows in separate parts of the city and I'd been running back and forth between the two all night long. Worthwhile in the end, but oh-so-tiring.
