At first glance, this image may appear to be a view of stars. Rather, almost all these different colored dots are black holes or entire galaxies. When we add sound, we can hear the data. Music represents the full range of X-ray frequencies collected by @chandraxray.

The central region of this image contains an incredible concentration of supermassive black holes, equivalent to about 5,000 objects that would fit into the area on the sky covered by the full Moon. Complete visual description of the Chandra Deep Field: chandra.si.edu/photo/2021/soni…

When you think about public libraries and the publishers’ market power in digital book licensing, sit for a minute with the fact that publishers view free book lending as a form of unfair competition that they’d like to eliminate. If ©️ law can’t support and sustain public libraries in the digital age, then its constitutional purpose has been abandoned. #copyright #lawfedi

The big block on taking the "problem" away from the "geek" in the hashtag #geekproblem is somehow getting past their desire for #control and the issue of #feudalism in our communerties. Kings, Princess, Nobals, are in no way a good path of "governance" in our democratic times.

Look at the picture, can you see trump or gab on it? They are NOT. Code is a tool, it has no power, all power comes from the social side, and yes we use tools to build society's, so we could play semantic games but best not. All tools are joint use, to break and to build. TRUST is we give the kids the hammer to build the treehouse, control is we do it and force them to sit to the side and watch, one is healthy one is illness, and the illness is the current #mainstreaming view.
in reply to vagabond

The limits on #mainstreaming thinking, GIVE the kids the tool, yes some will break some will build it is human, in the end it's TRUST or CONTROL.

This is a nice touch. Valve tell developers exactly why they use the Windows version in Proton on Steam Deck if the Native Linux build doesn’t work well 👌

@bigattck it’s not really a true statement. You don’t publish to Steam Deck, you publish to Steam and anyone can do that. This is just for formal verification.

This... how it should be done! Valve, once again, putting in such hard work to please devs and fans. Good stuff!

#fediforum We need to think about damage and good netiquette, all #Fediverse codebases are open-source.

People using and bring in codebases that are #closedsource are not "native" to the #fedivers. There will be STRONG social backlash about people who bring in closed source into the #openweb path.

NOTE am not pushing this problem, It's what is here in the space, have a blog on this subject hamishcampbell.com

in reply to Climate Videos

Yes, software can/should be owned and operated by #coops as #FOSS code, so they are adding to the coding "commons" this bridges the more traditional vertical thinking to work in hand with the grassroot thinking.

They can be complementary with shared FOSS licences

#openweb power that is impossible for the traditional closed source world to reproduce.

This is about CONTROL and TRUST we have this chose in the wider world hamishcampbell.com/?s=control

in reply to vagabond

@UncensoredNews
On the subject of licences there are many views google.com/search?client=firef… I tend to agree that the current #FOSS model is inadequate for stopping co-option, but it's the tools we have, and we need to use it, at the #OMN add a social side to this tool, the #4opens this has POWER if people use it.
in reply to vagabond

@UncensoredNews
In the end it's about POWER, the legal game is a fiction, it's the power that matters, code is power, pick it up and use it for light or keep your head bowed down in the shadows worshipping the #deathcult is the current choice.

Or live in the mess and pretend you are not on your knees, is a good option ;)

"good"

Works for most people ;)

Great. Our positions are getting closer. I totally do not trust Amazon, Facebook and Twitter to not misuse my open source software. Do you?

In a coop, all members have to agree to the rules, or there are legal consequences. Makes much more sense to me.

in reply to vagabond

Though this is as much a social problem as if is is one of licences, much #FOSS thinking and orgs have been consumed by#NGO thinking and are not fit for purpose, the tools are kinda OK it's the "users" that are incompetent. How do we fix this?

Gordon Moore, co-founder of Intel, has passed away at 94.

In 1965, he predicted that the number of transistors that could be placed on a silicon chip would double at regular intervals into the foreseeable future, increasing data-processing power exponentially. This came to be called Moore’s Law.

Moore later added that the evolving technology would make computers more expensive to build, but consumers would be able to pay less bc so many would be sold. nytimes.com/2023/03/24/obituar…
