This is beautiful.
Before I looked closer I thought this was a starlink train which made me sad. I'm still sad about starlink ruining the sky but this compound image of a lunar eclipse is beautiful
Edit: I think this is a solar eclipse?

While all software has security issues, the irresponsible behavior of Microsoft shows why anti-trust action is needed to reduce the stranglehold the big tech firms have over the cloud computing market. Without external pressure, companies tend to hide rather than fix problems. arstechnica.com/security/2023/… #security #bigtech #oversight

This has to be one of the poorest responses to a cyber security vunerability I have ever seen. And proves that businesses and institutions really need to re-evaluate the perceived safety level of microsofts cloud products like Azure AD

I thought MS did a write up of what happened. I distinctly remember thinking that what they worked out must have taken a lot of deep thinking to diagnose.

It's always fun to check in on the Lunduke blog to see what he feels is super important today, this time it's ignoring the actual qualifications of the new GNOME Foundation executive director and focusing on her hobby lunduke.locals.com/post/474049…
in reply to Brodie Robertson

I'll admit I was slightly amused by the fact that she believes in shamanism. But that's about it. It doesn't change the fact that she did lead non-profits for about 10 years. @thelinuxEXP had a great take on this on his podcast. Namely that there are executive directors with far worse shady histories. At least compared to someone just being interested in connecting with nature.

in reply to Adrianna Tan

I’m tempted to get into development but then I’d still need to send the film somewhere to be scanned so it’s probably not worth it
in reply to Eugen Rochko

If you have a roll here and there, you can send it to me, I can scan it easily, no big deal.
(if it's a 35mm film, though)

MMOs with sub fees have a bots, a fee does not stop botting by itself. In this case it's $1 annual the bot needs to make $1.01 per year and then it's just a matter of scale. I see this as nothing but an attempt to collect credit card information for the eventual Twitter payment system they want to make.
in reply to Brodie Robertson

@Flux Valve tried this with TF2. It was at least not completely stupid there because I don't think they expected people to pay money just to be assholes.
Twitter isn't a dying video game where you have little to no profit incentive. You can do some serious shit with sock puppets and bots, and people would absolutely pay $1 to spread misinfo, unsolicited advertising, etc.
@Flux
in reply to IAG

@iagondiscord @Flux The fun thing is all the bots are already paying for Twitter Blue

All, the U.S. just vetoed today's UN security resolution calling for a ceasefire: usun.usmission.gov/explanation…

So, here's what I want to encourage everyone to do.

1. Call your reps. Everyone. As much as possible, try and make it a call. Make the phones ring so much, the office can't operate.

We already try to eliminate single-use plastics but this was what finally tipped me from “Ugh I don’t have time to worry about *completely* avoiding plastic” to “Jfc fine everything’s going in glass or metal.”

The Economist used global excess deaths to arrive at the true death toll from the pandemic with a 95% confidence interval.

"Although the official number of deaths caused by #COVID19 is now 7m, our single best estimate is that the actual toll is 27.5m people. We find that there is a 95% chance that the true value lies between 17.8m and 30.8m additional deaths."

I've been following things in #Bluesky, but the way it renders links really puzzles me.

1. When @davew is posting links, Bluesky is not showing the link cards.

2. When @jeffjarvis posts links his posts have link cards.

3. When @kottke posts links it does not show link cards, and includes some brackets.

This is frustrating, I would like to see the link cards always because I want to see the title and image of the post.

Also, some of the links show a warning when I click and some don't.

in reply to Jari Pennanen

Jeff adds link cards manually through the iOS app or on the web. I submit my posts via API, which allows me to do custom link text. (I suspect Dave does the same). API users have to provide their own link card, which I haven't gotten around to doing yet.

(This DIY approach to the API actually lets you submit posts without links but with link cards. Or with link cards that don’t go to the same URL as the link in the post. Fun!

Halloween approaches and the veil grows thin. When the night descends upon the city, wailing sirens and flashes of light splinter the darkness to rescue those in need.

But they can’t save everyone. And tonight, they’re not travelling alone.

An open secret of big pharma is that the bulk of their "innovation" is trivial—they're mostly generating analogues to evade patents—and the real breakthroughs are always mostly/entirely government initiated and funded, then handed to private companies for rent-seeking.
