Aaron Straup Cope | Keynote Speech FACT Symposium

I was delighted to watch this Keynote address from my former colleague and long time pal, Aaron Straup Cope. In it he makes a number of nice references to the projects we worked on together and the things I worked on after he and Seb Chan left the team at Cooper Hewitt.

It’s been 15 years since and I’m amazed at how the work is still talked about across the sector. I’m really proud of that work and reflecting these days, I’m glad we did the things we did and in the way we did them, even when they wound up looking like “expensive mistakes.”

This talk is worth your time if you care about cultural heritage, museums, and the internet. It’s especially relevant today as we are continually asked to bear witness to the possible undoing of hundreds of years of American democracy!

in reply to Micah Walter

outstanding talk, thanks for sharing. The bit from minute 45-ish onward about he-who-shall-not-be-named is brilliantly written and delivered.

@Jay Bryant, thank you for asking!
I like the area and I am beginning to make friends!
Unpacking boxes is proving slow, because we are still recovering from the push to pack up everything in less than two months flat!

Coming soon to a neighborhood near you. Unless we call our elected and get loud. Really really loud.

in reply to Jen Sorensen

I was in high school when they first said that computers could teach kids - at least, for arithmetic drill. In the 50 years since, Bill Gates and Steve Jobs were really sure that computers would transform education.

Nope.

Notice that the lords of AI are NOT claiming they can replace that job? No fewer elementary school teachers?

It's because that's one area of human work where the KNOW they will fail. Again.

Friends had already sent me news about this change to Australia's electoral law. It certainly isn't hitting the mainstream news, but should. Juice Media to the rescue!

I hope so. I'm doing most of my gaming on Linux. Other than iPadOS
in reply to It's FOSS

Most responses here have already covered the reasons why or why it's not ready. The Steam Deck is the closest to plug & play, while most don't even realize it runs a Linux OS. So, I guess that's a good start. But once something does rear its ugly head, that's where the "average" consumer wouldn't know why something doesn't work, while others, like me, whom have used Linux to play games, have the ability to troubleshoot issues that arise. It's not ready yet. Getting close though.

The world might be devolving into madness, but I have at last got my vim setup to a very sensible and pleasurable place. Not much to it, either: gitlab.com/ntnsndr/dotfiles/-/…
in reply to scott

@scott I keep adding things than subtracting them when I realize a simpler way. What do you think I'm missing that's important? I'm still very new to this.
in reply to Nathan Schneider

that really depends on what you use it for. I have a lot of plugins for typescript development. most vimmers I work with have way more plugins than I do

Small businesses are considered the backbone of the U.S. economy.

They account for 99.9% of all U.S. businesses and employ nearly half of the American workforce.

Small businesses generate 44% of U.S. economic activity and have created two-thirds of all new jobs in recent decades.

This isn’t about #capitalism, it’s your #community: people and commerce.

Important question for you all. I'm attending a local camera meet-up group this Sunday for the first time. There will be lots of film photographers there with cool cameras. If you were me, which one of my cameras would you bring? I plan to shoot with whatever I bring.

"Tor needs many different kinds of users to be safe. The fact that we have military people relying on Tor, and human rights defenders relying on Tor, and everybody in between, is part of why it is safe for all of them. You can’t have an anonymity system only for cancer survivors, or everybody can guess why you’re using it."

In 2025, #PLOSBiology continues to advocate for policy based on scientific evidence.

I feel strongly about the need for evidence-based policy and a dogged defence of science. I said it in 2020, and will reiterate it til the end of time.

The world may change - our principles should not.

This 2020 Editorial, “We need leaders that believe in scientific evidence”, resonates today as loudly as ever: plos.io/34lyl59.

PLOS Biology also continues to push for DEI and a diverse scientific community:

it's funny it is called "Zima"Cube for a homelab thing. Because it sounds suspiciously like "Zimmer" in German which describes a room in someones home.

Current events have shown how important it is to massively shift away from billionaire social media platforms. For our mental health, for democracy itself!

There is much to do to convince people that decentralised social media is not only good enough; its lack of feed algorithms makes it *better*. After all, feed algorithms serve platform owners, not platform users.

Help us campaign for this historic shift. We offer 3-9 week fellowships to
resident activists (Leipzig, Germany).
