I still have high hopes that important projects will do the wayland move soon. Xwayland is something we have to keep around, but the full xserver isnt.

"How disruptive would it be if GitHub started deleting repositories, or Google Scholar started hiding certain papers in response to U.S. government demands?"

thetransmitter.org/policy/scie…

Most people with some interest have seen precisely this coming for more than a decade. @neuralreckoning is among them. It's great that outlets like @thetransmitter are now also recognizing this problem and are helping to amplify these voices.

#2024 #US #government revenue and spending
#USAFacts has a Sankey diagram that shows the money that came in during 2024 and how the revenue was distributed.
According to data from U.S. Treasury Department, $4.9 trillion came in mostly through taxes and $6.8 trillion went out. The difference, $1.8 trillion, contributes to the deficit. It will be interesting to see what this diagram looks like after this year is done (if the data exists).

A special photo for the folks that (still) say things like, "Oh, you shouldn't let your cats on the furniture..."

They are family, and they sit where the hell they want. If they are cold, I make them warm and comfortable.

It's definitely worth taking time to read this. 😀

For the record, the name change was done by the relative himself, not by "Ellis Island". The #ResistanceGenealogy lady is pretty adamant about that point. She found all of Abraham's paperwork, showing that he had started using the shortened name before he went back to the Old Country (where he returned from on this trip, bringing his family to join him). Other families' stories are very similar. It's complicated by the loss of outgoing ships' logs, which would have shown the names (1) sooner (2) without even the involvement of screening at arrival.

A minor point in such a ✊ letter, I know, but it's a myth that just won't die.

I haven't heard whether he responded to her or not.

with all that said... just when I thought Elon couldn't be more of a dick, he finds a way to lower the bar. What kind of schmuck rags people over generational trauma?!

🚨 Status update: We’re aware of two issues with deb.torproject.org & working on fixes:
1️⃣ Ubuntu packages are currently missing due to a CI issue.
2️⃣ The Onion Service for deb.torproject.org is unstable/unreachable.
No security risk—just a temporary headache. ℹ️ More info here: status.torproject.org/issues/2…

For myself, I find using a VM for things that can't run directly on Linux. I prefer using virt-manager / QEMU-KVM over VirtualBox or vmware.

While dualbooting windows and linux with secureboot works in theory, it has been a nightmare in the last 2 or so years. Microsoft has repeatedly put linux bootloader signatures on blacklists so linux doesn't boot anymore. It even sometimes deletes the linux bootloader completely during upgrades. This happened to a tuxedo system with linux/windows preinstalled by professionals. For a reliable system, I rec. linux only, windows in a VM if necessary.

#ElonMusk’s wrecking ball
#Musk’s declared aim is to slash US deficits by rooting out waste, fraud and abuse. His model is 80% of #Twitter’s staff he fired — starting with its trust and safety group. If someone essential is let go in error, he says, they can be rehired. That was case for hundreds of #nuclear safety officials fired this month. It took a while to reinstate staff monitoring nuclear stockpile because #Doge misplaced their contact.

Today we announced Nextcloud Hub 10 - our latest release set to redefine your everyday privacy, collaboration and, no doubt, productivity!

Here's a recording for you 😉

I found this slide from today's @nextcloud Hub 10 presentation interesting, and I can totally confirm it.
It always comes to mind when I see people marvelling at the progress of a new project, and viewing older projects as slow-moving.

At some point, all projects end up like this: the vast majority of the work is maintenance, and only a small fraction is new development.

Unfortunately, a lot of games that don't tag themselves, and Steam has no method by which to report such cases. But less AI in your feed is still better, even if it's not no AI in your feed.

Personally I think we should take another look at RSS v 1.0 (yes RIP Aaron Swartz) in this ActivityStream/Pub era.

Also, RSS helped with slow internet connections (Feedburner etc and less data per update) way back then.

Finally, no mention of one of mastodon´s cool features…
