“Historically, no one lived past age 35” "I’ve heard *so* many versions of this claim, including recently from a menopause doctor (implying menopause is not “natural” because noone lived long enough to go through it). Every time someone states this “fact,” a demographer loses a piece of their soul"

"Ambiguous one-word journal titles are a MDPI trademark (“Foods”, “Plants”). In the spirit of “if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em”, Springer Nature has launched a series of journals, the “Discover” series, with near-identical names (Discover Food, Discover Plants).

Why? How? And let’s ask the most important question of all: who will this benefit? It’s certainly not the authors."

This little guy hit a window while I was outside gardening. They were stunned for quite a while - I sat quietly nearby - but eventually flew off to join the rest of the family. As they recovered they perched on a fallen twig.
Short of plastering stickers and sun catchers over every square inch of the windows I don’t know how to stop birds flying into them.
I have a whole bunch of photos taken in random places, so why not make a general random photo thread! 🧵

A bit late for them, I guess. They might have sold me Dad of War Ragnarok if they'd put it on GoG alongside the first one
Anyways, still a step in a good direction, for sure

I'm back at the Kielderhead Wildwood, five years on from when I first started working with them as artist in residence through VARC (Northumberland UK).
Five years ago, all that was on site was a lot of low-lying brush and thousands of trees in deer-guards.

In 2020, Shane Finan was selected to take part in the project ENTWINED, partnering with the Kielderhead Wildwood Project—a community-led initiative in northern England where over 30,000 native trees were planted in the Northumberland uplands.Helen Pailing (Visual Arts in Rural Communities)
Me and two others planted a stand of 200 birch and rowan trees out on the moor in 2021.
It rained sideways, hailed, and snowed, and we carried heavy equipment over very rough terrain. We named it Varda Wood, after Agnés Varda. The trees were whips, inside tubes, no more than half a metre tall.
Now some of them are taller than I am.

Netanyahu the opportunist
Netanyahu is living out the Zionists' (incl his daddy's) dream of expelling the Palestinians, wiping out all enemies, & fulfilling the "Greater Israel" project (see map ).
Zionists have been doing ethnic cleansing, slow genocide & stealing Palestinian land since imperial Britain gave them the go-ahead in the 1920s.

Following on from that, NIST guidelines recommend:
❌ DON'T enforce complexity (upper, lower, numbers, special chars)
✅ Instead, DO require 8 chars minimum, and up to 64 at least
✅ Also, allow _any_ characters (space, apostrophe, etc.)
❌ DON'T force users to change passwords regularly; then they just add incrementing numbers at the end and it doesn't help security
✅ But DO block passwords/patterns (qwerty, asdfasdf, etc.)

I decided to revive an old chromebook with a full featured UEFI firmware, making it an actual PC notebook.
It worked like a charm for over a year, then out of nothing, an ALSA update messed up the audio configuration.
Luckily, there is a patch repairing the last patch upcoming.
But things like that should not happen under no circumstances.

in reply to It's FOSS • • •We are all laughing whenever Windows messes up updates. For good reason. On the other hand mistakes happen. No problem at all.
But I don’t expect minor updates to break essential things like sound. It took me weeks to test and find out what the error actually was. Now finally a patch arrives.
Average users aren’t that patient.

At any time, so things work well bcs they matured enough, but other things are a mess bcs there is work going on in the background, but you are the beta tester. Graphical subsystems, sound servers, networking, all those things...
X11 is not stable anymore and declines while Wayland is still just 95% working. Things like that.
