One criteria:
โ That it's #ubuntu
I started using it in late 2004, and have been using it ever since. I see no reason to switch.
As a 20-year user of #ubuntu I find concerning that the page celebrating the 20 years of the OS is full of references to LinkedIn and twitter: what a disconnect between Ubuntu the company and ubuntu the enthusiast user base. The page, the celebration itself even, is then not for non-paying users but for the enterprise-level users that pay. Makes sense, of course โ a company needs to pay its bills โ, but it is nonetheless an upsetting reminder.
While sending dozens upon dozens of bug reports over the years surely doesn't pay the bills, it is also free labour ubuntu got from me. Fair deal, though: I got a free, stable OS out of it, for 20 years, for all our servers, desktops and laptops.
And the "ISV" acronym (independent software vendor) finally explains why the rise of the snap packages, which as a user I don't want anything to do with โ they have consistently brought trouble. Only makes sense, again, from the perspective of an enterprise with bills to pay.
