There is this psychological thing known as "cognitive distortion".

One example of cognitive distortion would be how when you are driving you have a certain amount of probability of meeting a few red lights. However, rather than thinking about this as something that happens now and again, you might think to yourself, "Why do I always run into the red lights?"

"A cognitive distortion is an exaggerated or irrational thought pattern involved in the onset or perpetuation of psychopathological states, such as depression and anxiety." Wikipedia

Some scientists think that we all at times fall into cognitive distortion, because it was of some evolutionary value to perhaps over-generalise for instance. Honey has health benefits for humans. However, if you get stung often enough trying to access it, you might assume that honey is bad and there is no way to get at it anyway. This will protect you to a certain extent. Having the creativity to figure out how to safely harvest honey might be even more useful.

Right now we are facing global-wide existential threats. We need to be cooperating with one another. Certainly, some individuals will always be incapable of working safely with others. However, over-generalising about groups of people is a sure-fire recipe for stopping cooperation in its tracks.

We have to show sufficient maturity to not easily fall into judgements and hatreds. We no longer have the luxury of saying, "A person with a green mohawk once hurt me, so all people with green hair or mohawks deserve to be punished." You might be missing an enthusiastic young person and environmentalist. If you are a woman, now is a time it is easy to say that all men are evil. Even among our "allies" we have men who are a whole lot more sexist than they realise, or are being manipulative. Nevertheless, we need our allies in order to make change. So, we need the strength to judge for ourselves one person at a time who is on our side. Sometimes that determination can be quick without the "help" of cognitive distortion.

Just because someone doesn't 100% agree with you should not necessarily make them evil. Just because you don't 100% like someone doesn't mean they aren't doing a good job of helping to improve the state of the planet. Someone can be brusque, but dedicated to picking up trash on the side of the road or planting trees. During the Trump administration I heard people making fat jokes and jokes about toupees. How many good and kind people were hurt by being dumped into the Trump camp simply for sharing some physical characteristics? Some over which they may have no control?

Hatred and shaming do not make the world safer. Right now the world needs to be a whole lot safer.
