Cyberpunk Librarian – Episode 68 – Come With it Now
Episode 67 leads right into episode 68 as Dan takes on the theory and practice of underground librarianship, anarchivism, and shadow librarianship. Links No right to information at public libraries…Cyberpunk Librarian
As ever, a great, motivational episode!
I am completely overwhelmed, burnt out even, by an ILS migration which is not happening as well as it was supposed to atm, but I really want to lead some new projects afterward which would be more public-focused, and you gave me a few ideas I could more or less adapt to my community.
@val Hey, I get the migration frustration for sure! The nature of my job? It's not unusual for me to help a library with an ILS migration at least twice a year. And the only thing I can ever tell anyone about ILS migrations is "There is the plan, and then there is what actually happens, and these are two very different things that will diverge almost immediately."
The ride will come to an end, just probably not as smoothly as anyone would like! And good luck with yours!
Oh yeah, although there are way more hiccups that I would have expected. Luckily, I have a pretty good grasp of the data we migrate, and I have a colleague who's very much at ease with DB management, and we have a service provider who's going to be sysadmin who's doing a lot (although, I am pretty sure we are doing more ourselves than is usual…).
But we also have deadline, because after Aug. 31, the former ILS is gone for good.
Also,… for the sake of honesty: I have been working as a public librarian myself for 11 years: adult section manager, ILS manager, cataloger, circulation desk, etc.
I do not have an actual library degree, either.
I have a master in history, & some administrative paper saying I have followed 2y out of 4 of evening librarian courses (burn out of studiying after 6yuni + these 2y), and I started working following a good internship before I got the paper.
@val Totally understand. It's not a useless degree, and it never has been. But after working with newly minted librarians year and year, from the Masters to the Doctorate... I've worked with so many people who didn't learn the things they needed to learn. And it's not their fault, that's on their schools. That's a problem with curriculum. I'm sure this isn't a problem with all of the library schools out there but...
I find that a lot of them are somewhat divorced from reality.
Here it is a non-universitary degree, but yeah, there a few interesting things, but not that much, and it depends A LOT on the school.
My partner is doing it, and she’s gonna switch school, because she tired, angry even, at how useless most of her courses are… The school she’s going to seems way better, both content-wise and organizationaly.
We feel that divorce from reality too, every time we have an intern actually, and esp. for public libraries.

Asking for the temporary close down of Jews museums, to separate themselves, from the #Israel #Zionist is a great idea. Many Jews are against israel.
Zionist killed 60000+ people and are #starving a couple of millions. Commiting #war #crimes and commiring a #genocide in #gaza and an #ethnic #cleansing, according to the #ICJ in #hague.
Stop programming for a few hours and read what the world says in mastodon. And don't pretend to be more clever or witty than the rest of the world and the ICJ judges.
Germany and germans are loosing this argument, big time, all over the world.
Israel are #criminals and #murderers since 1948. That is an historical fact as big as the Jewish Holocaust.

With respect, no he isn’t. He’s expressing an opinion that using an historical tragedy to mask abhorrent behavior now is unacceptable. He is entitled to his opinion, as are we all.
He is not suggesting that the offending museums should be closed or that their portfolios should be distributed elsewhere or erased.
The ‘different bar’ is a fair comment, but argue this point, not some other invented offence.

Ubuntu has been confusing me lately. They keep making sweeping changes that rework their entire distro away from the common standards. Yet they seem to be doing so based on extremely shallow reasoning? Why streamline? What bug are your trying to resolve? I know it ain't a size problem cause server isos are tiny. Are they bored?
TLDR; Why they streamlining and please tell me they have a default alias for wget to wcurl?

The more I used it, the more I enjoyed the experience of updating from the terminal, exploring FOSS, and learning a new OS. I miss it when I have to use Windows on my work machines.

Despite losing all my data and learned not to make such drastic changes without backups, I never regretted it. Not only did Linux help me understand how operating systems work for my class, but I also now prefer Linux over Windows.

over time of using linux, i saw another reason: SDKs and anything related appeared more on linux than on windows, sometimes some README.mds straight up expecting you to have linux or WSL.
