imo, this feels to me like an indicator that the rule was too broad, given the thought and nuance behind the post. I do understand also that 99% of engagement on the topic is not high-effort/high-value, and that most instance members welcomed the new rule, and that part of being in a community is yielding on some things to maintain cohesion. but there is a part of me that is pretty disappointed that we totally banned a topic of such relevance (regardless of the perceived value), and that the creative and critical minds of the extended merveilles community won't be part of this conversation moving forward. I'm not really suggesting the rule be changed given its reception, but am just sort of publicly lamenting the fact that this piece of writing, which feels important and very much like it should belong here, is no longer welcome here, and that I'm not really sure there's an alternative community for it to live within.
for context, I didn't report this myself, but had two reports made on it from members of the instance. I read the post, it does have a bit of nuance, but folks on here(me included) are just exhausted of having these circular arguments on topics we've decided collectively that we want to avoid. I agree with the reports, it should have been unlisted. The local feed is just not the place to discuss about Claude and Chatgpt, whether they're great or terrible.
The whole rest of the internet is that place right now.
@jakintosh @neauoire I do agree with you jak that it feels wrong to ban a topic of discussion. However, I see the rule as a way to keep (only) the local feed free of AI in a time when it’s practically impossible to avoid the topic elsewhere, which I like. At the same time, I can’t really say that e.g. my operating system endeavors are more interesting/thoughtful and worthy of the local feed than a well thought out post on AI.
it's not really about a post being necessarily interesting to everyone. It doesn't have to be, it's about topics of conversation that actively harm the mental well-being of members, like the no-gore post on the timeline for example.
You'd think it's a very low bar to clear, but the same point can be made, why ban the discussion on carnist views in a time when the beef tallow business has never been better.
For the sake of people who come here to escape all that, let's use unlisted. 😀
@neauoire @gustav @jakintosh this sounds a lot more clearcut than how I'd personally interpreted the rule. Maybe the jackpotmaxxing rule could be clarified to literally say 'no AI discussions on public local timeline', else I think this will be a recurring issue.
As currently written the rule reads to me as only 'AI promotion' or 'AI good' posts forbidden.

I wonder if it would be possible to make a charitable organisation that receives and buys stock in companies and holds it on behalf of their workers, letting the workers vote with that stock. That might be a small avenue to workplace democracy. If it ever gets enough of a company, it could turn it into a proper co-operative. #economics #socialism #marketsocialism
Yeah, ESOPs are a version of that, abeit often with a pretty constrained view of worker interest. A charity, also, might encounter tension between a charitable charter and worker interest. Why not just do it as a cooperative to start with?

Starting more seriously on the interface now, I think I got everything down where I want it. Through all my years of programming in #Uxn, I've managed somehow to never learn much about emulating larger numbers and just lived within the boundaries of 16-bits, but I do skirt pretty close to the boundary sometimes. For example, if I want a little progress bar 0x32 pixels wide, to display a value between 0 and 0x15, I have to do a little bit of finessing to have enough resolution in a short to emulate what in other languages you'd use decimal points for.

But in the end my talk went fine 😁 , I at least made one person curious about permacomputing and had lots of fun, So I guess We can conclude "Nodus Tollens" was Introduced to the world successfully

@neauoire so basically, we were planning the conference for this 6 months, and the local organizers didn't have a good team, so everything was finalized and booked but at the day of the conference, our booked classroom was given to some other conference, and we were supposed to had accommodations inside the campus itself, but it was canceled and some hotels were booked, the hotels booked by the organizer was so bad, people booked hotels on their own :/

I know 100% that people will argue with me over this, but I miss when movies were professionally lit, when actors were intentionally blocked, and when more than teal, orange and beige were allowed to be on the screen. The medium has something to do with it--film made a lot of these things fundamentally necessary--but I think it's more complex than just that. The last few years' movies are just not pleasant to look at, with very few exceptions, and the change occurred sometime around 2015.

I do miss the curated lighting and blocking That said I’ve seen quite a few actors IRL and maybe they’re just getting better at hiding how artificially they’re lit and positioned cause it’s been jarring every time LOL. (I used to live in Santa Fe and the place is littered with em)

Money is the reason. Movies have become investment vehicles, and investors want safety. Thus aiming for the biggest audiences, and most people want slop. Not just the looks, the storylines, characters, anything, aren’t much better.
Gaming went through a similar pallet in the early 2000s. I’m glad that passed.
And I know how you feel. It may be part of why I like animation so much, it hasn’t been hit so hard with browning. It’s so great when a movie has colors that really pop.
Yeah a movie about a guy trapped in the middle of the Sahar or Death Valley is going to be low on color. NY, LA, Minneapolis, other real cities have colors.
if you haven’t seen ‘The Eight Mountains’ by Groeningen you should. Came out in 2022, and gave me a lot of hope about what films can create these days. Another standout is ‘Happy as Lazzaro’ by Rohrwacher in 2018, unusual in plot and beautiful cinematography.
The obsession with HDR — super dark scenes to mimic realism in light levels is also annoying. It’s more difficult to enjoy what you’re watching if you’re struggling to see what’s even on the screen. I get that in real life, something might be happening in pitch black conditions but I think for cinema it’s still better to just give the suggestion of darkness rather than the complete actuality of it. 🤷♂️
i mean, ok, but my kingdom for proper sound mixing. im so tired of music/sfx being so loud and dialogue being so quiet. even w subtitles (enshittified by ai), it sucks.
saw a video on youtube that theorized with evidence that Netflix contributed to a lot of the shitty new filming formats. There was a great joy in theatrical style of filming. As in if it was a live theater performance. The original Star Trek series was a great example of this! Maybe not what u were going for but it reminded me of all this
It seems to me like there are about as many well-lit, well-graded movies as there have always been, but that there are more movies overall than there ever have been in the past. A lot of movies—even from big studios—are basically shovelware, yes. A lot of really good production and post techs have gone to prestige TV rather than movies, yes. Still, there have been tons of expertly-produced movies in the last decade.
actually the change occurred after 2000 when Harvey Weinstein took over Hollywood. Movies were original, incredible, stimulating and then Harvey wanted to push out terrible remakes to increase sales and fill movie seats.
The thing that bothers me the most is the sound quality. Older things took pains to be audible. Modern stuff, half the time I can't understand what they're saying. But it's not my ears. I go back and listen to older stuff, and it's still clear.

I agree with you that this trend exists and is swallowing up lots of movies, but there is some relief in the wide-ranging supply. I went looking just for a still from "Sinners", which I think is a fine example against that trend, but I found a dozen more to boot.
I totally agree. Nowadays, it feels like movies are afraid of real shadows and vibrant colors. Everything has turned into a gray, digital mush to accommodate streaming and CGI, but we lost the soul of cinematography in the process. Older films had a texture and depth that today's color grading algorithms simply cannot replicate.
watched the 1955 Austrian movie Sissi the other day, not a masterpiece by any means but good god it’s nice to have natural (though I suppose in reality it was anything but natural) lighting and colours.
That said, there are plenty of beautiful looking movies made today too, just not the norm.
RE: Blocking in Film - you are reminding me of director Mike Nichols (The Graduate, The Birdcage). He and his stage partner Elaine May were some of the earliest improve comedians in the US. His films were meticulously acted because the casts would rehearse the films like a play for weeks before filming. That allowed them to inhabit their roles, have natural reactions, and to get the blocking just right.
You don't like the aesthetic, but unfair to imply it's 'unprofessional'.
Maybe you need to look elsewhere besides Hollywood. Digital production and distribution has opened up filmmaking to so many talents that couldn't afford it previously. Drama aside, nature photography and documentary can be better quality now.
The most interesting drama I've seen is no-budget Japanese films. "One Cut of the Dead", "River", "Beyond the Infinite 2 mins".
💯 The point to watching is a movie is for the fun of it. Nothing's fun anymore. Everything has to be a big statement. Broody. Moody. Real. We all live in broody moody real. I don't want to see it for "fun"!
I can give you twenty movies made in 2025 that challenge what you wrote in the above post and you'll scoff at every single one. It just seems like you don't like the medium (past a certain year).

@tvaziri How a movie is lit and colour graded is an artistic choice. I do hate the modern grungy, depressing yellow colour grading indicating a warm climate, but if you think all movies look alike, you need to watch more movies. 😀
@David Hugo is from 2011 and despite being full of CGI it still looks vibrant and very different visually to let's say Wake Up Dead Man, which is one of the better looking modern examples, so the cut-off point is sometime after 2011.
@David Hugo is a fantastic movie, but is famously almost all teal and orange. That’s not a knock against it, I just feel like maybe your issue isn’t use of those colors, but with movies not making *good* use of color
