Hypercorrection in Grammar and Pronunciation
Fascinating article.
Labov-Hypercorrection
"Labov-hypercorrection [is a] secular linguistic term associated with the embedding problem in which style stratification of marker is such that (usually) the second highest status group in a speech community uses higher status variants in formal styles more frequently than the highest status group.
"This linguistic behaviour can be interpreted as being the result of linguistic insecurity. Labov-hypercorrection should be distinguished from hypercorrection, whch is a feature of the speech of individuals. Labov-hypercorrection is term which is due to the British linguist J.C. Wells, who suggested that it was necessary to distinguish terminologically between individual hypercorrection and group hypercorrection of the type first described by William Labov in his research in New York City." (Peter Trudgill, A Glossary of Sociolinguistics. Oxford University Press, 2003)

OpenSUSE Linux Has ANOTHER Distro Stream!
OpenSUSE has yet another distro stream in the pipeline and I absolutely adore the dumb name, OpenSUSE Slowroll, it's slower than Tumbleweed but quicker than ...YouTube
I don't entirely see the the point of this distro, but can see how it will be useful to some. Opensuse Tumbleweed is already pretty stable thanks to its testing.
I think corporations and individuals who need relatively new software but also want as stable a system as they can get may appreciate this.
My biggest concern is how are security fixes handled? Backporting patches will be difficult if the goal is to automate as of much of this as possible.

In my case I had to purge all existing Nvidia and Cuda packages and installations, and install the cuda-drivers, nvidia-drivers, and cuda packages.

take homes have problems too.
The best interview format I've had was:
Short greet video explaining the task, then you're given access to a repo and slack channel for clarifying questions.
Do the task with your setup, push a branch after the allotted time, then another video where you explain your thoughts process and the interviewer can ask follow up questions.
This is an interesting format. What is a typical alloted time for this format? I am thinking of how interviewers/devs are "on call" in the chat channel during this time.
Also, what are the problems you've experienced with take homes?

“Never heard of Cecilia Payne?
Now you have”
Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin's 1925 thesis that the sun was composed mostly of hydrogen and helium was rejected by a professor who called it "impossible". Years later, the man who rejected it realized she was in fact right, but he was credited with the discovery for decades. A prominent astronomer called her discovery "the most brilliant PhD thesis
ever written in #astronomy".

in reply to Muse • • •Yes, the socio-linguistic poster child phenomenon. Named such because Labov noticed and reported on the rhotic /r/ as used by retail store staff, and the finding was confirmed in a similar study 24 years later - the second highest status group basically was and is putting extra effort into pronunciation.
Sociologically overgeneralize this and you're saying oh, the middle class is keen on asserting its socially upward movement, while the upper class does not do rhotic consonants.

in reply to Muse • • •That study merely formalizes one small aspect of something sociolinguists have known for a long time: Social climbers use the forms of the higher social stratum.
A classic example is "beef." Before Bill 1 invaded, that meat was called "cow" in England. After Bill invaded and all the surviving nobles and (especially) the merchant class wanted to ingratiate themselves with the conquerors, that meat got to be called "beef." As one of my professors explained, "'Cow' in the stable and 'beef' at the table is one of the best examples of social climbing you'll ever find."

in reply to Muse • • •Other aspects are that Oxford University banned the speaking of english on or off the premises by students - you got birched if you did.
Then another weird matter - you could escape the death penalty if you could say a few words in latin. It could only be used once - your fingers were tatooed to show that you used up your clerical privilige.
You didn't have to understand the latin words..., nor be a cleric...

in reply to Muse • • •Oh goodie, I just have to remember:
Locus ab auctoritate est infirmissimus.
That's from Thomas Aquinas, a Saint of the Catholic Church, a serious authority figure, saying that we should not trust authority.
Oh, the translation is:
The argument from authority is the weakest.
