I brought houseplants to the office and they promptly were infested by fungus gnats. At home I normally just repot the plant with a better-draining soil to stop fungal growth, but that's impractical at the office! So I brought a mosquito dunk: wafers full of endospores of Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti). The spores contain protein crystals which when dissolved in the guts of the fly larvae, release a toxin which form pores in the larvae's gut, causing it to starve.

in reply to Dr. Dan Killam

For me this is a beautiful example of biocontrol. Endospores are a long-lasting packaging allowing the live bacterial culture to be sold in a shelf-stable form. The bacteria specifically target fly larvae, sparing me having to use a systemic pesticide. And it worked! A few days later, the fly population has crashed. A few adults remained when I first showed up, but haven't seen any more pop out of the soil over the day! Science rules.

if the protest works, i'm curious what'll happen with the vast supply of pre-owned teslas that nobody wants to buy. teslatakedown.com

if they're already built and cratering in value while sitting on a lot…I don't think it would be the worst thing in the world if it ends up meaning more people can buy an EV who previously weren't able to afford one.

does that means that it will be illegal in uk and Sweden to use it?
in reply to Maffia

@maffia Not illegal to use Nextcloud, since our E2EE features are modular, which means you can enable and disable them as needed for your particular situation (and legalities). That said... we believe encryption is very important! Please use encryption everywhere you can! 🕵‍♀️

#USAFacts has a Sankey diagram that shows the money that came in during 2024 and how the revenue was distributed.
According to data from U.S. Treasury Department, $4.9 trillion came in mostly through taxes and $6.8 trillion went out. The difference, $1.8 trillion, contributes to the deficit. It will be interesting to see what this diagram looks like after this year is done (if the data exists).

It's definitely worth taking time to read this. 😀

For the record, the name change was done by the relative himself, not by "Ellis Island". The #ResistanceGenealogy lady is pretty adamant about that point. She found all of Abraham's paperwork, showing that he had started using the shortened name before he went back to the Old Country (where he returned from on this trip, bringing his family to join him). Other families' stories are very similar. It's complicated by the loss of outgoing ships' logs, which would have shown the names (1) sooner (2) without even the involvement of screening at arrival.

A minor point in such a ✊ letter, I know, but it's a myth that just won't die.

I haven't heard whether he responded to her or not.

with all that said... just when I thought Elon couldn't be more of a dick, he finds a way to lower the bar. What kind of schmuck rags people over generational trauma?!

While dualbooting windows and linux with secureboot works in theory, it has been a nightmare in the last 2 or so years. Microsoft has repeatedly put linux bootloader signatures on blacklists so linux doesn't boot anymore. It even sometimes deletes the linux bootloader completely during upgrades. This happened to a tuxedo system with linux/windows preinstalled by professionals. For a reliable system, I rec. linux only, windows in a VM if necessary.

I found this slide from today's @nextcloud Hub 10 presentation interesting, and I can totally confirm it.
It always comes to mind when I see people marvelling at the progress of a new project, and viewing older projects as slow-moving.

At some point, all projects end up like this: the vast majority of the work is maintenance, and only a small fraction is new development.
