hello, France here. We use those in the media. All the time. It doesn't work in a post-truth era.
Peaceful protesters are defined as barbarians, environment-friendly proposals are qualified as "authoritarian", even as terrorism. The gov regularly pushes unconstitutional laws and when they are rejected by the authority in charge of protecting it, the gov says the constitution needs changing.
You can use more words, it doesn't matter if you don't care about their meaning.

Is This the End of Democracy?
"The warning lights are flashing. Across the globe, democratic institutions are showing cracks in their foundations—even in nations where democracy once seemed unshakable. That gnawing sense you've had that something fundamental is shifting in our political landscape? You're not alone. Citizens everywhere are questioning whether democracy as we know it can withstand the mounting pressures of polarization, inequality, and executive overreach."

@nextcloud I’m suspecting that scan.nextcloud.com has a DNS problem for a good week now. No matter which of my Nextcloud instances I put in there to security-scan, the only response I get is “Host not found”.
Tried with multiple different browsers, without Adblock/Tracking Blocker, Extensions. Same result.
Maybe your OPS team can find a moment to look into that?
Thanks in advance.

in reply to Muse • • •@Jay Bryant We have a multi-party system in Australia. It has been slowly devolving to a two-party system, as the two most powerful parties keep putting roadblocks in front of other parties and finding ways to decommision them.
Even so, a multi-party system still requires wealthy donors in order to campaign effectively. Career politicians of all parties can and do become disconnected from their electorate, the people they are supposed to represent.

Once upon a time we didn't have above the line and below the line voting. We didn't have the Federal Govmint telling The Progressive Party for instance that they couldn't run because they just made this rule that says they don't have enough people to run.
Oh and all these shenanigans:
Eight things you need to know about the Government’s plan to change Australian elections
Oh look! They still have not brought back truth in advertising applying to political advertising! So by law our parties are allowed to lie, lie, lie without consequences. They removed that regulation the first year I moved to Australia back in 1989.

Unfortunately this meant that some smaller parties were also swept away in the wave of "enough!" but i'm hopeful they will rebound - i like the idea of, for example, the former Sex, now Pirate, Party having the final say in proposed legislation.
Perhaps Finland, Norway or even our cuzzies in New Zealand could give us a few pointers in how to tidy things up.

i like above and below the line voting - if i dont want a particular candidate anywhere near the passing of legislation, i can omit them from my vote while still supporting the party. Or i can select all the candidates i would like to see in the House, without supporting any particular party (they do tend to cluster with like minds though, of course). It's a good chance for the populace to say "we like you but not that candidate".
i'm undecided on the rule that one has to have a certain number of people to be a Party which runs in elections. To be truly representative one should have a fair few people to actually represent...hmmm...dunno.

in reply to Muse • • •The Sex Party became The Reason Party.
The Australian Pirate Party was inspired by the European Pirate Party. I approached them in their early days to find out what they were about. They hadn't had a meeting in some time, and so told me I could organise a meeting for them. I did. It turned out that in Australia the people who gathered under that name did so because they felt it was the tech-bro party. I still didn't have a full grasp of the group, so I was convinced to organise another meeting. When it became clear that these people were largely libertarian, I politely bowed out. People really liked that I was doing the work and stayed friends with me--but not my thing. It has evolved over the years and may be more my thing now. Maybe I need to organise more meetings to find out! XD

Legalise Cannabis is another party altogether but of course has members from Hemp as well as various others that have found themselves too small to make a dent but perhaps could get a seat as an amalgamation.
Maybe more meetings would be an idea! 😁

But it isn’t. It belongs to the ruling, monied class, playing lip service to citizens’ interests and - these days - basic human rights, whilst supporting the interests of big business and chasing media headlines.
I do not believe that more elections to a reconstituted upper house are the answer. We’ll just get more of the same.
My own thoughts:
- Proportional representation - no more majorities elected on minority votes.
- A property disqualification for candidacy for membership of any governmental body. No-one earning or holding more than (for the sake of argument) 10x average salary or wealth need apply.
- 100% tax on earnings or wealth above that (for the sake of argument) 10x limit for everyone.
- An upper house that requires experience as a qualification - no career politicians, but community leaders, and people with a proven practical expertise in law, business, social work, medicine, international affairs, diplomacy. The list of fields

Would it be opening the floodgates to corruption...and how could we prevent said random reps from behaving irresponsibly in their duties, knowing they have only to get through a term and never be heard of again..
we have something akin to transparency atm but i doubt anyone is 100% convinced that's working.
it is an interesting idea nonetheless.
i quite like your proposals, @Simon Ashcroft
