Beautiful weather today. A good reminder to go outside and enjoy it—in the garden, the park, or the forest. Just like Püppi used to.

Another week, another story of the callousness of the British state; the already failing e-Visa system seems to be corrupting & dismissing people's right to stay in the UK, has this week halted a mother's return to be with her child, while stranding her in Germany with another.
As so often the Home Office is quick to make mistakes but slow to rectify them with (seemingly) no regard to the human costs.
The state's runs rough shod over normal people (again).

Plants are often seen as passive organisms, rooted in one place and largely unable to react to the world around them. But a new field of research is challenging these assumptions and showing that plants are as sophisticated as animals in detecting and adjusting to environmental signals.
Plants can perceive light through specialised proteins, detect sound vibrations and respond to touch via mechano-sensitive channels, recognise chemical signals released by neighbouring plants, and even retain memories of past experiences through changes in their DNA.
My own research focuses on how plants detect the passage of time as part of their seasonal cycle, but that is merely one aspect of a major reconsideration of their sensory capacity – and the parallels with animal senses.
The secret sensory life of plants: researchers are discovering how they see, hear, feel – and even remember
Plants can tune into the sound of water to direct their roots towards it, or release toxins to make themselves less palatable to browsing animals. The Conversation

I'm sure that I've put this up before, but it is relevant to a couple conversations.
Brilliant song. Brilliant animation!

@Simon J Ashcroft that sounds like something straight out of on olde timey music hall!
I remember hearing about this one music hall singer, perhaps from the Edwardian era, who was taken to court for singing a song that had the lyric, "She sits among the cabbages and peas." This was considered licentious. So, she was fined and told she could no longer sing that particular line. She went back to the music hall and instead sang, "She sits among the cabbages and leeks!"
like this
Ooooh, the leeks are so much more innocent than the lewd peas...
"She who cooks beans and peas in the same pot is not hygienic"
😅
it sucks up top too, it's cold and windy, and the mast is ice cold, and you're swinging heavy vice-grips over your head while someone down below is shouting instructions you can't hear.
I wish we had mast steps.

There was recently a Parliamentary By-election in the Gorton and Denton constituency, which was widely expected to be a 2 horse race between Labour (formerly a vaguely Socialist party, now somewhere off to the Right of Thatcher *spit* and accelerating, in search of Right Wing voters), and Reform (Nigel Farage's massively profitable company masquerading as a Far Right political Party).
And the local Green Party put forward a local woman, Hannah Spencer, a plumber, against career activists from somewhere thst isn't Gorton and Denton, with exactly the same disdain for the Right-wing policies outlined in that comic.
And she won.
