What does it mean to federate your Flipboard profile? In the simplest terms, it means that whatever you curate (aka share) on Flipboard will be "syndicated" out to the fediverse with no extra effort. @miaq tests it out and breaks it down.

Flathub's Unverified Badge Feels Pointless #Linux #YouTube youtu.be/P2PMx_Az-iQ
in reply to Brodie Robertson

Tone, linguistics, semantics. These are a few of my favourite things. Failures to communicate? One of my least favourite things, which happens way too often in the open source space.

I agree about the "Possibly unsafe" messaging. Both Apple and Google just inform you that the app uses certain permissions to gain access to certain features. #flathub should inform the user just that.

In regards to verification, anything not #opensource should get a yellow badge. Outdated Flatpaks should be red.

in reply to Brodie Robertson

While I think Flathub could have used a milder tone, I think the message is still important. There are quite a few questionably packaged packages on FlatHub and I definitely think the user should be aware that it's unofficial when they encounter them.

This also might push developers to make those packages verified. Or maybe the maintainers of flatpaks can work with project devs to improve the quality of the package to make it official.

AI is just today’s buzzword for “outsourcing,” and it comes with the same problems that have plagued outsourced companies and workforces for decades, writes Princeton University sociologist Janet Vertesi:

The audience is folks who might be buying art for their home and is for First Exposures, which is a terrific program that provides youth mentoring through photography. Here's more about the program but if folks can provide feedback on which image they like best I'd appreciate it! #BelieveInFilm #photography

What the AI revolution means for Open Source, Open Tech and Open Societies?

From @socallinuxexpo , Jos explores the challenges and opportunities of AI from the perspective of our open source projects and communities.

Can AI be ethical? Private? Sovereign?
... Yes!

Here's how:

socallinuxexpo.org/scale/21x/p…

in reply to Nextcloud 📱☁️💻

, the energy consumption in itself makes running these LLMs unethical. I won't be running that garbage on any of my machines. Glad Nextcloud assured me these things would only show up as plugins, otherwise I'd have to hunt down a new cloud storage platform as a solution for my data storage needs.
in reply to Nextcloud 📱☁️💻

Just because the AI runs locally and the models are open source, it is still not clear where all the images and texts come from. I am sure that none of the authors, artists and publishers were asked. This hype is a reflection of our society. We have completely lost sight of reality and what is important and what is not.

Battlefield V now broken on Steam Deck / Linux with EA anticheat live gamingonlinux.com/2024/04/batt…

#BattlefieldV #Linux #SteamDeck

in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮

All EA is doing is ensuring I never buy another multiplayer game from them again. Hoping SW Battlefront II (2017) doesn't have EA anticheat added, as that's the only multiplayer game I still play made by them.
in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮

thank you EA!

It's not like your games work great even if they are played directly on Windows, but thank you for making 100% sure we get the full EA experience on Linux.

I'll probably dump it in both issue trackers but what do you guys think, pipewire crashes when I'm capturing my display with the kde portal and I change the output of my monitor, then try to change my volume level

Is it a pipewire bug or a kde bug?

in reply to Brodie Robertson

Looks like it's actually wireplumber that's crashing, not pipewire itself
in reply to Brodie Robertson

I got a WirePlumber crash too yesterday when screencasting to Discord (Fedora 40 KDE). That was on 0.5.0 version of WirePlumber and I've got an update to 0.5.1 today. Didn't test it yet on newer version.

Could Fedora Workstation Go KDE Plasma!?! #Linux #YouTube youtu.be/isChogqh_lE
in reply to Brodie Robertson

Fortunately, KDE themes would be stripped access to your home directory before that? 🙂 Maintainers are quick on the uptake, and I would love to see what Plasma 6 has brought.
in reply to Brodie Robertson

I'd expect the Plasma workspace to be at on top of GNOME in the long run.

That said, I'm not a fan of this idea, because Fedora would change a lot. Adding another option would mean creating questions. "Whats the best one?" for new users. It would create more testing. Let alone that I think Plasma is a horrible desktop >>for people that just want to have a working system<< (absolutely not in general) because of the "settings-ocean" with no clear design language.

Have you decided whether to test Nextcloud against the redict and/or valkey forks?

codeberg.org/redict/redict
github.com/valkey-io/valkey

Redict is LGPL, which should help protect against yet another anti-open-source relicensing. It's also hosted on codeberg, so not as subject to Microsoft's influence. Valkey has the weight of the Linux Foundation behind it. Any thoughts?
