Sorry to link out to Twitter but this is a good thread on Mastodon’s structural flaws and how they lead to the erasure of disabled people. twitter.com/stephtaitwrites/st…

Eugen Rochko
@hyperplanes A trove of wildly viral content on here disproves this idea. Just yesterday I saw a poll with 26 thousand votes in it. All you need for virality is the reblog (boost). There are people who are literally on a server-of-one and go viral regularly here.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron @hyperplanes Which content is viral on here? The point of the thread is that the public is historically very adept at ignoring disability. What does Mastodon do to break that status quo, and amplify marginalized voices? If the answer is, "We treat everyone equally," then you're equally marginalizing those voices as much here as anywhere else. If that's not a priority, then it isn't, but please don't then claim that marginalized voices have access to public visibility here.

The ill-conceived and illegal program of "robodebt" that caused the deaths of numerous people who were falsely charged with accepting too much Australian social security aid.

Among those attending the inquiry was Kath Madgwick, the mother of 22-year-old Jarrad, who died by suicide in 2019, hours after learning he owed a $2,000 Centrelink debt.

"I want to see some accountability, to see that nothing like this happens again, that there's some safeguards in there for people with mental health," Ms Madgwick said.

She said she was "appalled" to learn the department had been warned about potential legal issues in 2014, before the scheme came into effect.

Attention: there are some known bugs with the new Mastodon version (4.0.1) that areecausing posts to be incorrectly filtered using the filter settings from other accounts. Details here: github.com/mastodon/mastodon/p…

There may also be a bug with uploading certain media types.

We will apply fixes ASAP when available.

@Gargron I've had several people complain to be about being rejected when posting media due to size. So far, I can't reproduce it, though
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron the report is related to profile picture size, not in normal posts. I suspect that is working as designed.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron So there's an old bug that causes a few problems with GIFS (github.com/mastodon/mastodon/i…) where the aforementioned workaround does not resolve the issue. I noticed it when I signed up for Mastodon. It does still seem to be an issue in the newest release. Even changing the compression level of the GIF didn't seem to work (I tried a few sites). (Basically, I had to use my Discord avatar's profile link to re-dl the same GIF in order to work around this issue). Screenshot below:

In the #UK it's not always sunny enough for one of these to be useful, but I've hooked mine up to a #DIY #battery pack—made of #recycled #liions—and while it's basically useless on a cloudy or rainy day, it actually provides a meaningful amount of power on a sunny day.

This would never work as a commercial product because, if these components were all brand new, it wouldn't make any economic sense.

That's the beauty of #solarpunk #diyelectronics and #recycling! It brings a whole new life to these reclaimed panels and cells!

How do allistic people even communicate empathy then? I actually don't known? ...

If Mastodon keeps getting this sort of support, people won't have much reason to remain on Twitter.

We Have Added a Mastondon Server--The Internet Archive

The Internet Archive has recently set up its own Mastodon server– a federated/decentralized open source social media package– that has garnered lots of attention lately.

We use it in ways that we use twitter now (we are not leaving twitter):
• @internetarchive@mastodon.archive.org for events, announcements, and fun things
• Staff accounts (e.g. my account @brewsterkahle@mastodon.archive.org) for, well, whatever.

Why? We need a game with many winners, not just a few powerful players.

With the help of @tty and @d6, we've found a non-intrusive way of adding metadata to #uxn roms, so external programs can see some additional details about the program and also display an icon.

The specs is here: wiki.xxiivv.com/site/metadata.…

A stand-alone program to display metadata: git.sr.ht/~rabbits/uxn/tree/ma…

in reply to Devine Lu Linvega

Question out of curiosity: Is the icon necessarily stored in the metadata block or is it incidentally the case it might be a resource the app itself uses for something else 😁
in reply to mcc

@mcc The app can access it as well, if I click Noodle > About in the app, I also get to access this from within itself.
@mcc
in reply to Devine Lu Linvega

Can the metadata header be executed as uxn opcodes, or should it be written before 0100h?

There's a bit of a storm happening around the criteria for joining fediscience.org - the Mastodon instance for scientists, on which I'm hosted.

It's been noted that the requirement to be a publishing scientist (who has published in the past 5 years) will exclude many junior scientists, retired sciences, and those who have maybe switched to teaching.

I agree with these concerns and wonder if the criteria can be changed to be more inclusive?

Cc fediscience.org/@FrankSonntag

in reply to Peter Tennant, PhD

I think there are many good reasons why scientists may not have published yet or may not have published in the past few years.

I don't think such people should be unwelcome on fediscience.org and believe the current rules are hence overly exclusive.

I really hope that the rules can be changed to be more inclusive and allow this instance to become a diverse and welcoming home for all scientists.

#ScienceMastodon

in reply to Peter Tennant, PhD

To me this seems like the approach is reasonable to anticipate a potential flood of users. I don't know what the local timeline is like there, but there is certainly an interesting dynamic set up if only senior academics are present. If you are interested in helping to fork the community in some way I would be happy to help.
in reply to Peter Tennant, PhD

I appreciate that the hosts of fediscience.org are welcome to make whatever rules they want.

However, I think we need to be mindful of the inclusivity of the spaces we create, maintain, and implicitly support. I recently donated to the upkeep of my server. However, if the @admin team decides not to revisit the rules, then I may look to change server as supporting diversity, equity, inclusion, justice, and belonging are vitally important to me.

#ScienceMastodon

in reply to Peter Tennant, PhD

still finding my way.

But struck by how much I *loved* the principles @Gargron stood for, therefore thrilled to get spot on .social

While I fear missing out on @fediscience.org discourse
It is important for me to do #SciComm beyond publishing scientists... (#Policy #Public ).

But moreover... a major question based on the entry criteria are... where do #ECRs or #PGRs go if haven't published yet? What about the aspiring students?

#NotInclusive

in reply to Dr. J Bernadette Moore

@fediscience.org @TheMooreLab @Gargron @admin what’s the advantage of joining that server? I’m happy with a generic server as long as I can connect to others. We have enough gated platforms in academia and science as it is.
in reply to Prof Nisreen Alwan ☀️

@nisreen I would think folks who join that instance would be interested in talking to other scientists or some other affinity with the values in their code of conduct. The existence of this "publishing" requirement does not prevent scientists who do not meet this criteria from finding each other whatever instance they are on. In smaller instances the local timeline can support a type of community building that is more difficult to achieve on a large general purpose instance.
in reply to Dr. J Bernadette Moore

@TheMooreLab I don't think the @admin is exercising power over any scientist choosing to join the fedi. A useful thought to illuminate how there is no power-over in this circumstance is the existence of other science based instances (eg sciencemastodon.com) nothing—as far as I know—prevents folks who disagree with the fediscience policy from joining or migrating to those instances so why take up valuable time in the (volunteer) admins' feeds arguing about a very neutral situation.
in reply to Dr. J Bernadette Moore

@TheMooreLab
Do you think that the principles that you have heard are properly implemented on mastodon.social? Do those principles create a space where bad actors can be removed? Many old guard admins are hesitant to fully federate (typically it's "limited") with that instance because it's thought to be too big to moderate properly. In the larger view of the fedi it could be thought of as a landing pad, where folks must migrate from in order to fully embed themselves into existing networks.
in reply to Danny (he/they)

@danwchan yes. I get all of that and I have not ruled out migration from my landing pad if offered principles do not align with lived experience. But taking my time to gather data ( lay of land as it were). I have witnessed lots of loud migration folks being either quick to criticise or hyperbolic in their praise of mastodon. Whereas I am approaching with a ''take 6 months to sus' attitude.
in reply to Dr. J Bernadette Moore

@TheMooreLab I think it's wise to take time to observe the new context in which we find ourselves in and modify our behaviour/existence (behaviour referring to the way in which we interact with others, existence referring to the digital places and people we choose to connect to) accordingly. I'm excited for this influx of new users and I hope it helps us reimagine and participate in new networks so we can broaden our perspectives and find previously hidden avenues of solidarity.
