Why did my wife and I move aboard Wrack in old age?
Being homeless and out of options was part of it but I was also haunted by my own words in this 2021 interview for Anna Iltnere's When I Grow Up project, in which I described myself as a 'castaway'.

#FreeSoftwareAdvent day 15: Nextcloud
SyncThing is great for synchronising files, but I also have a self-hosted Nextcloud server. If I only wanted to synchronise files, I'd probably just use SyncThing, but I use Nextcloud for things like CalDav for calendars and CardDav for contacts as well as files.
More recently, I've also started using Nextcloud apps. In particular, I use News for RSS feeds, Notes for simple notes, and RePod for podcasts. The apps accessed through the Nextcloud dashboard on the web have minimal functionality, but it's enough for me. In the case of News and Notes, I also use the official Android clients, which also offer mininal functionality, but again, I don't need any more. For podcasts, I mostly listen using AntennaPod on Android, which I'll talk about tomorrow.
It's worth noting that there are companies that will host Nextcloud for you if you don't want to self-host. At least some of them have a free tier if you don't need a lot of space.

Hello everyone!
I'm making a port of the Kilo editor by antirez (originally in C) to #uxntal AKA kibi (I'm not sure it will be around 1 "kibi"lines of code lol!
But I'm also porting the awesome tutorial by snaptoken teaching how kilo works.
I'd greatly appreciate if someone could take a look (maybe even follow along the tutorial) in order to get feedback.

I'm aiming for no previous Uxntal experience required!
Best regards.

A while ago I wrote a script to convert #uxn .icn files to .png. For my #DecemberAdventure I wrote an accompanying script which converts .png files to .icn
This has the effect of pixel-izing the image and I can control which pixels get converted to black or white based on a threshold applied to their R, G, B, alpha values. It also allows me to load any png into Noodle and draw on it!
I am a bit slow when it comes to programming, so my Adventures tend to be limited. But I’m glad I got this done

Science’s 2025 Breakthrough of the Year: The unstoppable rise of renewable energy
"In Sept, Chinese President Xi Jinping declared at the U.N. that his country will cut its carbon emissions by as much as 10% in a decade, not by using less energy, but by doubling down on wind and solar.
To many, the continued growth of renewables now seems unstoppable—a prospect that has led Science to name the renewable energy surge its 2025 Breakthrough of the Year."

RE: mastodon.social/@Gargron/11573…
I'll elaborate. I believe we're in an AI bubble. AI companies are pushing the overton window on AI discourse. They want the most extreme anti-AI sentiment to be "Sure, it's an overhyped technology right now but there will be reasonable applications down the road". I want to see pushback on this. It doesn't matter if I can disable some AI feature in the settings. The fact that Mozilla is jumping on this bandwagon is deeply disappointing to me.

Were they voted on? Are they continually re-evaluated based on community input? Were they set by the founder(s) (@ntnsndr?) in stone, like a written constitution?
I'm also interested in some specifics of what the rules mean:
Does the prohibition against transphobia cover respectful critique of the ideas of the transgender movement or is it just about actual hateful speech?
Also, what does the community do immediately when someone starts breaking the rules and causing trouble?
Does the rulebreaker get put in a sort of "time out" until a decision gets reached?

The engine had a 'moment' at the end of the long passage to Sardinia from the Alboran Sea but we've serviced her attentively and by and large, she's been trouble-free.
She'll probably need a major refit at the end of next season but by then, probably, so will we.
Our biggest problems, with the boat and our lives, in the past few years, are rooted in our poverty and lack of social support (public health, pension, etc.) and adequate income. We're doing our best to change that.
