An editor from a Springer Nature journal, a company that posted $2.1 billion in revenue in 2022 [1], from an industry with double-digit percent profits (~30% [2]), kindly asked me, an academic in the UK where salaries continue to plummet [3], whether I would be pleased to review a paper for them, for free ... so I kindly asked whether they would consider paying me. It is only logical.

[3] In UK academia, "Pay has fallen significantly in real terms since 2009, as have pension contributions, and redundancies are rife. Short-term contracts and precarious work arrangements are common, especially for younger staff, as universities struggle to balance their books." telegraph.co.uk/news/2026/01/2…

Good news! The final ENTSO-E report into the Spain blackout is out A complex stew of different factors, but "too much solar" is simply not even among them, let alone a major component. As always: the narrative built by fossil/nuke advocates was wrong www.entsoe.eu/news/2026/03...
in reply to Ketan Joshi

What is going to happen now is that a bunch of journalists are going to Ctrl + F "solar", screenshot what they find, and without understanding what they're looking at present it under a headline that'll look something like FINAL REPORT SHOWS SOLAR WAS TO BLAME FOR DEADLY BLACKOUT APOCALYPSE
in reply to Ketan Joshi

The big talking point that emerged DURING the blackout, led in particular by Bloomberg's Javier Blas, was that over-reliance on solar resulted in low 'system inertia' (the heartbeat of the grid). Others, such as a prominent Norwegian nuke advocate, helped spread it. it was COMPLETELY WRONG

OpenTTD devs clarify store changes with Transport Tycoon Deluxe re-release as Atari contribute server funding gamingonlinux.com/2026/03/open…

#TransportTycoonDeluxe #Atari #OpenTTD #Gaming

in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮

> "[...]but I want to reassure OpenTTD fans that we have not been “pressured” by Atari to make these changes."

This seems a bit weird. Are we to believe that the OpenTTD devs just happily chose to put someone else's paywall on the game?

Like, I can imagine why this might be considered a fair an reasonable outcome, but obviously it is not a win for OpenTTD. Its a decision that surely must be the result of implicit pressure. Right?

in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮

given how this could have gone for openTTD, this does seem like a pretty good arrangement.

I couldn't be more excited to announce something I've been working on for a long time -

Please welcome Belltower House Artist Residency, a multidisciplinary gift of time in my erstwhile home in southern New Mexico, now accepting applications for 2026.

in reply to everest

This home has been such a gift to me over the years, and I'm so excited to see it serve as a creative refuge for others. I find living and working here to be productive, peaceful, and deeply affirming.
in reply to everest

Applications are being accepted for both spring and fall 2026, but the spring sessions are very soon- so we're likely going to keep it word of mouth / friends of friends as we get off the ground. Please share with those who you think might benefit from the space and time. belltowerhouse.org/

They're falling over themselves boasting about being NPCs.

@Aladár Mézga I know. We have many people originally from Hong Kong who migrated here before Hong Kong was "given back" to China. They always wear masks for the slightest colds, flus, or hayfever. It's good practice!

In the first years I moved to Austalia the Federal government passed a law with support from both Labor and Liberal politicians which limited truth in advertising laws such that they did not apply to political speech. This was used in the upcoming election to misrepresent small parties and take their seats.

Is this Democracy? The Welsh have the right idea!

Law to make it illegal to lie in Welsh elections passed

The Welsh Parliament has passed a law to make it illegal for candidates to lie during Senedd elections.

The new law paves the way for a new criminal offence to make false or misleading statements of fact to help an election candidate...

The bill also establishes a recall system, giving the public the opportunity to kick out politicians who have misbehaved from the Welsh Parliament in between elections.

Google has news on what you will need to do for still being able to sideload apps:

* enable developer options
* confirm that you are not tricked
* restart phone and re-authenticate
* wait one day
* confirm with biometrics that you know what you are doing
* decide if you only want unrestricted installs for 1 week or forever
* confirm that you accept the risks
* enjoy the few apps that still have developers motivated to develop for a user-base willing to put up with this

I ran Arch for years, but eventually I got tired of having to periodically spend hours figuring out how to fix a broken update or a busted AUR package.

I've since moved on to LMDE7 because I just want my computer to "work" - I don't want to have to work extra hard to make that happen. Sorry Arch!
